Day 2 Completed

Day 2 in the Bag

What a day of poker that was!

A full EPT event's worth of players returned to the Casino Municipale this afternoon, and those 620 players were just half of the total starting field from this record-setting PokerStars.it EPT San Remo. Six levels came and went with players dropping off the board at a brisk pace. In fact, we were nearly able to reach the money bubble at 184 this evening, but we'll have to settle that little bursting issue early tomorrow instead. In total, it looks like just at 200 players survived this second day.

It was, overall, not such a great day for the Team PokerStars Pros. Pieter de Korver had a rather short day, as did his fellow Dutchman Lex Veldhuis, who is still nursing some broken body parts from his sparring training sessions. Also extinct through the course of the day were Brit JP Kelly, Italian Dario Minieri, Brazilian Andre Akkari, and Germans Michael Keiner and Sandra Naujoks. Just as the final hands were being dealt, the not-so-chipper-this-week Luca Pagano also made a quiet exit.

On the flip side of things, we have a few familiar names on the good half of the busto-or-robusto see-saw. EPT Snowfest winner Allan Bække must be doing a lot right, because he was in that familiar front-running position for the bulk of the day here on the other side of the Alps. Steve "gboro780" Gross had himself a whale of a day, as did the ever-dangerous ElkY. EPT regular Yury Kerzhapkin is well overdue to "bink" something (as they say in Russia), and he's also among the chip leaders heading into the meat of the tournament. At the end of the night, it appears Dmitry Stelmak edged his way into the top spot. He finished with about 670,000 chips, and we couldn't spot anyone who could challenge that. We'll have to wait for the official chip counts before we're willing to put our necks out and call it though.

So, that's all we have for tonight. We hope you enjoyed it, and we hope to see you right back here tomorrow at noon local time. Until then, buonanotte!

Less for Jelassi

Further last-minute woe for Ramzi Jelassi as he three-bet to a raise from Dan Shak. Shak asked how much he had left - 110,000 - before deciding to flat-call.

They saw a {J-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {A-Clubs} flop and after perhaps a second and a half's thought Shak announced all in to cover Jelassi, who promptly folded. Shak showed him {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}. "You should have put me all in pre," said Jelassi, "Then I would be out."

Hold It

The clock has been stopped, all media and so on have been summarily ejected from the tournament area, and the last six hands of the night are being played right now.

Do Double

Claudio Rinaldi raised to 9,200 only to find Jimmy Ostensson shoving for 125,000 and Quinn Do calling all in for 70,000 behind. Rinaldi folded, and they turned the cards over.

Ostensson: {J-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}
Do: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}

Board: {A-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {A-Spades} {K-Spades}

Do's pair of queens turned into aces and kings with a queen kicker which still beat Ostensson's aces and kings with a jack kicker. Do doubled to around 160,000, while Ostensson was left with just about 55,000.

Kim Back in the Game

Kelly on Day 1
Kelly on Day 1
Kelly Kim is "back in the game" in his own words.

It's been an awfully long day for the 2008 WSOP finalist, grinding his ten-big-blind stack for hours on end. Finally, the wait has paid off. Kim was lucky enough to pick up pocket aces when a covering stack shoved on him with king-queen. His aces doubled him back into contention, and the newfound chips have given Kim some room to open up his game.

A few small pots later, and he's up to 190,000 just like that.

Gross 5-bet

Alexander Roumeliotis, the current chip leader with around 600,000, raised to 10,000 from the small blind. Steve "gboro780" Gross, playing about 470,000 reraised to 38,100 from the big blind before Roumeliotis repopped it to 90,000. Gross then thought long and hard before making it 160,300 to go. Roumeliotis looked a little pale and folded his hand, Gross showed {Q-Clubs} {8-Spades} and Romeliotis laughed and showed the {8-Clubs}.
