Final Thirty Six Reached!

Chris Ferguson . . . just one of the players in the money!
Chris Ferguson . . . just one of the players in the money!

After nearly fourteen hours of play, Event No. 6, $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout has come to an end!

A near-capacity 358 players took to the felt today to form one of the strongest fields assembled for this buy-in amount at a WSOP event. Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren, Chris Ferguson, Jeffrey Lisandro and Barry Greenstein were just the tip of the iceberg - as the list literally goes on and on - representing the calibre of players that were looking to carve their name in a slice of WSOP history. Throw in some of the world's best online players and sit-n-go masters and you easily have one of the toughest events for the Summer.

Unfortunately, only thirty-six players would survive the day with everyone that defeated their table not only making it to day two, but also the guaranteed payout of $16,607.

Dario Minieri, John Duthie and Chad Brown all topped their relative tables while James Akenhead and Neil Channing joined Tom Dwan, Christian Harder, Blair Hinkle, Faraz Jaka, Max Pescatori, David Rheem and Chris Ferguson in the final thirty-six also.

With the remaining players all in the money, they will however be eyeing the top prize of $441,692, the coveted bracelet and title of Event No. 6 Champion!

So make sure to join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team from 2:30 p.m. PST where we will be providing live coverage of every rivered flush, turned straight and flopped set!

Wheeler Progresses

Brent Wheeler is the final member to sneak into the top thirty-six.

Moving all in over his opponent's preflop raise it was Wheeler's {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} in great shape against the dominated {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}.

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Spades}{J-Spades}{3-Hearts} to put Wheeler into the second round and end play for the evening.

Hopefully Not Long Now

Currently the final heads up match is pretty even with the player refusing to give us his name sitting with 85,000 while his visibly tired opponent has 65,000.

With blinds at 1,200-2,400 and a 400-ante there is just over sixty big blinds on the table, so hopefully soon there will be a result.

Just One More Match

There is just one more match remaining with the two players locked in an intense heads up battle.

We would like to provide you with details of the two remaining players and their chip counts, but one is refusing to provide his name until later on.

Gross Gone, Katz Wins!

Steve Gross pushed his last 10,000 or so into the pot and Cary Katz made the call from the big blind.

Gross: {8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Katz: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

The board ran out {2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{J-Spades}{J-Hearts} to see Gross eliminated in second place as Katz advances to the second round and a guaranteed payday of $16,607.

Chan Straightened Out Then Spat Out By Duthie

No money for Mr. Chan today
No money for Mr. Chan today

Terrence Chan opened to 9,000 on the button and John Duthie made the call to see a {5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop fall and a bet of 8,000 follow from Duthie.

Chan made the call to see the {2-Diamonds} land on the turn and Duthie fire out 16,000. Chan moved all in and Duthie made the call for his last 51,900.

Chan: {Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}
Duthie: {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

With Chan drawing dead against Duthie's higher straight, he slipped to 16,000 as Duthie soars to 134,000 in chips.

The following hand Chan committed his remaining chips holding {Q-}{2-} and ran into Duthie's {Jx]{5-}. The window card was a five, and when no help arrived for Chan, he hit the rail in second place as Duthie pushes through to the second round.

Boosted JJJJ

Justin Smith goes by "Boosted J" online, and he was just boosted into the second heat thanks to a couple of J's.

With 40,000 chips in the pot and the board reading {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, Smith bet 23,000 into Anh Van Nguyen. Van Nguyen moved all-in and Smith snapped it off tabling {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for quad jacks!

Van Nguyen showed {A-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a rivered flush, and shook Smith's hand before exiting the tournament area.

Congratulations to Mr. Smith, we will see you tomorrow.
