Evan Ross Leads Day 1c; Mitch Schock Not Far Behind

It was a short day for Day 1c of the 2012-13 World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event at the Lodge Casino — at least for poker tournament standards. The day last eight hours with 150 players originally sitting down hoping to build up a stack to contend with the survivors from yesterday. After 12 action-packed levels, Evan Ross led the way with 141,100 in chips. Following Ross in the counts are WSOP gold bracelet winner Mitch Schock (116,300) and Randy Nguyen (109,100).
From Day 1c, 58 players are moving on to Day 2 to join the 76 who moved on from Day 1a and 1b. Amongst those who are still alive are David “ODB” Baker (89,800), Phillip Hui (65,700), Michael Taylor (54,000) and Michael Sanders (19,800), who is looking for back-to-back tournament victories here in Black Hawk.
Unfortunately, not everyone was able to make it through the day. Along the way we lost two-time bracelet winner Carter Phillips, Eric Roussakis, Rex Clinkscales and Chris Conrad. All of these players have fired two bullets and are therefore done in this tournament.
There are a few notables who busted on their first bullet today. That list includes Nghi Van Tran, La Sengphet, “Cowboy” John Land and WSOP Circuit Lake Tahoe Main Event champion Cary Marshall. These players will have the option to come back tomorrow and buy in directly to Day 2. If they do so, they will have a stack of 20,000 with the blinds starting at 700/1,400/200.
That does it for us here today. Tomorrow, the 134 survivors from flights 1a, 1b and 1c will return and join any other players who still have the option to buy in tomorrow morning. When they all get together, the plan is to play until Level 25 or until the final table is reached, whichever comes first.

Coultas Eliminated in Shocking Fashion

Poker is a great game. There are few highs that can compared to dragging that big pot, pulling off that bluff, etc. However, it can also be a down right awful game, and we just saw that on display when Charles Coultas was eliminated.
We only caught the tail end of the action, but here is what we saw. The flop read 
, and Coultas was heads up with Randy Nguyen. We don't know the first two bet sizes, but we know that Nguyen led, Coultas raised, Nguyen three bet to 12,000, and Coultas shoved all in for 60,000.
Nguyen went deep into the tank, and at one point, held his cards up for his half of the table to see: 
. Nguyen had Coultas slightly covered, so if he made the call, the pot would have been over 125,000. Nguyen eventually made the call, and saw that he was up against the worst possible hand he could see.
Coultas: 
Nguyen's top pair top kicker would need runner runner straight or running aces to win. Well the 
hit the turn, and based on what we've said so far, you can probably guess what came on the river.
River: 
The whole tabled groaned at the site of the river, including Nguyen. To Coultas's credit, he took the beat very well, sitting in silence and shock for a few moments before getting up and wishing the table good luck.
After that pot, Nguyen is up there with the chip leaders of the tournament, with 135,000.
Poker is a brutal game.

Ross Routing the Field

We were making our rounds through the tables collecting chip counts when we noticed that one player had suddenly amassed a massive stack. That player is Evan Ross, who is up to 153,000 with just over one level to go. This stack puts him at second in the tournament right now, as only Ross Lecavalier bagged more from yesterday.

Schock Brings Down The Hammer

Action folded around to the player on the button, who raised it to 2,300. Mitch Schock defended his big blind, and the flop came down 
. Schock checked to his opponent, who fired out 2,300. It didn't take long for Schock to grab all of his yellow T5,000 chips, six in total, and put them in the middle, a bet of 30,000. This put his opponent to a decision for the rest of his chips, and he kicked in his hand after 15 seconds of thought.
Schock is setting himself up for a Day 2 run, as he is now sitting on 58,000.

Taylor Shoves The Turn

Michael "Life" Taylor was as high as 34,000 earlier today, but he got knocked down to as low as 14,000 after losing a flip. However, we just caught him win a nice pot to get himself back up to 28,000.
We caught up with the action on the turn, with the board reading 
. There was about 4,500 in the middle, and Taylor fired out a bet of 2,800. His opponent announced raise, but only threw a single yellow T5,000 chip out. He then put out another T1,000 chip to make it an official raise, but Taylor was not dettered, as he moved all in for 14,500 total.
His opponent only thought for a few moments before folding, and Taylor scooped the much needed pot.
