    Not Kosk-Effective

    Ilkka Koskinen is busto. He was down to shrapnel when he got his very last in with pocket fives, but Brandon Cantu called with {J-Hearts} {10-Hearts} which caught a jack on the flop.

    More on 'That Cantu Hand'

    Thankfully, my secret source was able to fill in the details and retrace that sick, Cantu/Golser encounter.

    Brandon Cantu raised preflop and Markus Golser called.

    Flop = {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

    Cantu continuation bet and Golser called.

    Turn = {5-Spades}

    Cantu checked
    Golser bet 3,000
    Cantu raised to 10,000
    Golser minimum-raised to 17,100
    Cantu four-bet to 35,025 (Golser had 11,000 back)
    Golser folded

    Cantu showed {A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

    I Can Too Outdraw Queens

    Dreadful misfortune for Brandon Cantu who called off 3,600 with pocket queens, and was right -- his opponent was squeezing with {10-?} {2-?}. But woe, the {10-?} {2-?} made trips, and Cantu is down to 1,000 or so.

    Cantu Busts

    Brandon Cantu was all in on the flop of {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} holding {A-?} {Q-Diamonds} against his oppoenent's nut flush draw with the {A-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds}. The turn brought the {5-Diamonds}, making the flush and sending Cantu to the rail. The river completed the board with the {2-Diamonds}.

    Cantu Moves to 41K

    Brandon Cantu bet 1,500 on a flop of {10-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}. His opponent raised to 4,000 and then Cantu snap-shoved all in. His opponent made the fold and Cantu moved his stack to 41,000, showing {J-Spades} {J-Clubs}.

    Cantu Moves back in the Plus

    Brandon Cantu raised to 600 and the big blind called. The flop came down {K-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {4-Clubs} and after his opponent checked, Cantu fired out 625. The player made the call.

    The turn brought the {5-Clubs} and both players checked. The river fell the {2-Diamonds} and Cantu's opponent checked. Cantu fired a bet and his opponent folded, moving Cantu up to 32,000.

    Lee Watkinson Eliminated in 2nd Place ($141,873); Brandon Cantu wins Event 48!

    We finally have a winner. After a series of hands in which all the chips went in the middle, Brandon Cantu eliminated Lee Watkinson. On the final hand, Cantu raised his button to 150,000 and Watkinson called. The rest of the chips went in on a flop of {6-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}. Cantu showed {A-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {4-Diamonds}, a pair of fours with a club draw. Watkinson showed a huge draw, {2-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {5-Spades} {7-Hearts}. Any non-board-pairing low card would have been a great card for Watkinson. Instead the turn fell {9-Spades} and the river fell {4-Hearts} to make trip fours for Cantu and finally send Watkinson to the rail.

    Watkinson walks away with $141,873.

    Cantu Climbing

    We're playing with blinds of 15,000 and 30,000 now and an average stack of 680,000 chips, or about 23 big blinds. That's really not very many chips at all in this game (since it requires drawing so frequently). Thus even a small rush of winning the blinds a few hands in a row can make a significant change in a player's stack.

    Brandon Cantu has taken down four pots in a row to climb out of the Dank Position.

    Vedes Slips Away from Cantu

    After a bit of a delay in the action, we came back to a thrilling but anti-climactic hand. Tommy Vedes opened for pot (105,000), then called after Brandon Cantu re-potted from the button.

    Vedes moved in first on a flop of {6-Hearts} {9-Hearts} {K-Hearts} and Cantu called all in for 135,000 chips. Cantu showed {A-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {8-Hearts} for unimproved aces; Vedes showed {Q-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {2-Clubs} for unimproved queens. Of course, as these things go, the turn and river came running low cards, {5-Diamonds} and {7-Hearts}, to make a qualifying low for Vedes. He therefore salvaged half of the pot and avoided doubling Cantu up.

    Cantu Fires Chips to Drag Pot

    Jacqmin Mathieu was the preflop aggressor, raising to 50,000. Brandon Cantu was the preflop caller, sitting in the big blind. Things changed after the flop of {7-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {2-Spades}. Cantu bet 108,000 and Mathieu called. When the turn fell {K-Spades}, Cantu made a huge bet of 324,000. Mathieu thought things over before folding.
