A Hand From the WSOP with Billy Kopp: When Attempting to Extract Maximum Value Fails (2)

Sounds like Billy had the read right - he just didn't realize it. When he said - wtf? to the turn bet - it was too small - screamin' CALL ME PLZ. Of course it all makes sense now, right? Hard to get away from Aces over eights, no doubt, but if Billy had read the caution lights correctly and just called the turn - surely he won't fold it - see the river and see what happens, then if the villain shoves it's easier to fold. Otherwise, if the villain makes another "reasonable" value bet on the river, you pay him off but keep the rest of your stack to keep playing. Also, a min-raise to the "call me pleez" bet would have provided good info. The more I learn about this game, the more I hate shoving.

Now you are missing the point about extracting maximum value. There was only one card combination that could beat him, exactly the two remaining eights. You can't put your opponents on the nuts every time they make what looks like a 'please call me' bet, especially if your hand is so strong. As is said in the article he still thought it could be a value bet bluff from QQ KK or a straight up value bet from AK. Now include 88 to this range and it's still a range that he is dominating so much that he can't afford to play cautious, he just has to try and get maximum value with aces full.
