Police Inadvertently Bust High-Stakes Poker Game

Sweetwater, TN - Officers from the Sweetwater Police Department responded to a complaint of loud noise coming from Room 129 at the Best Value Inn, but it wasn't noise they found. Instead, a card table, between 50 and 100 decks of cards, almost $25,000 in cash and six - well, poker players - were discovered in the room. According to The Monroe County Advocate, the police report states that hotel clerks originally informed police that no one was registered to Room 129. One of the clerks then placed a call to the room and allegedly said she knew the occupants and that they would not play loud music. Police then left the front desk to go to the room and said that the clerks tried to beat them there. One member of the game was seen trying to hide a white bag behind a refrigerator, which authorities said contained nearly $5,000 in cash and was believed to be the pot for the last hand. Charges are currently pending for the six suspects and two hotel employees.

Kanawha County Table Games Vote Facing Recount

Last week we reported that Kanawha County in West Virginia narrowly approved a measure that would permit the Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center to offer table games such as poker and roulette to its patrons. The referendum was later found to have been tarnished by overlooked and improperly counted ballots, but whether or not those ballots will be enough to overturn the outcome remains to be seen. The post-election audit of the results had the racetrack winning by a total of 343 votes, which actually increased its original margin of victory by more than 300 votes from initial reports. Still, the West Virginia Council of Churches has opted to pay the $300 bond required to initiate a recount, which could take place as early as next Tuesday, according to County Commission President Kent Carper. Mia Moran-Cooper, former director of West Virginia's problem-gambling hotline, asked the county for the recount, which would leave her ultimately responsible for paying upwards of several thousand dollars in costs, in the event that the outcome fails to change.

Britain's Labor Party Accepted Gaming Donations Prior to Talk of Scrapping Plans for a Super Casino

Less than two weeks after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labor Party accepted a £100,000 donation from Bet365 Ltd., a massive player in the online gaming industry, Brown announced that he intended to reconsider plans to build a super casino in a rundown area of Manchester as a way of rejuvenating the deteriorated area. The recent surfacing of new information has left Brown exposed to accusations of hypocrisy from both the gaming community and Labor opposition. Manchester won the bid to host the United Kingdom's first super casino as part of an initiative launched by former Prime Minister Tony Blair geared toward revitalizing the local economy.
