
In breaking news, on the eve of the their inaugural event, World Team Poker officials announced at a launch party tonight at the Golden Nugget that the event has been picked up by Fox Sports Net, which will air 13 episodes.
While team poker itself is not an entirely new concept, pitting the best players from different countries is. The team captains have already selected their teams, and each team will play in up to four league matches a year, culminating in an annual championship event.
Slated to air in July on FSN, each team will be captained by superstars of poker from their respective countries, including Phil Hellmuth, (Team USA), co-captains Johnny Chan and David Chiu (Team China), Men “The Master” Nguyen (Team Vietnam), Eli Elezra (Team Israel), Ben Roberts (Team England), co-captains Jeff Lisandro and Tony G (Australia), Juliano Maesano (Team Brazil) and George Kapalas (Team Greece).
The buy-in for this inaugural event is $50,000 per team and will play out as a five-table shoot-out consisting of rounds of limit hold’em, pot-limit Omaha and no-limit hold’em.
