Global Poker Index: 2013 Player of the Year Ole Schemion Takes Lead in GPI 300

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

As expected, Ole Schemion is now officially the 2013 GPI Player of the Year. The young German reached the final table of 14 events in 2013, won three, and pocketed $1,652,680 in the process.

With a min-cash in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $100,000 Super High Roller, Schemion passes Daniel Negreanu to take the lead in the GPI 300. Vanessa Selbst, who finished third in the same event for $760,640, moves up three spots and now sits at No. 5.

Steve O'Dwyer, Paul Volpe, and Erik Seidel all enter the top 10 of the GPI 300 this week. Volpe recently finished third in the Eureka High Roller for $98,665, while Seidel finished runner-up in the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic Super High Roller for $650,100 and the EPT Barcelona Super High Roller for $745,224.

Five-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner John Juanda returns to the GPI 300 at No. 159. Juanda earned over $3.1 million in 2012, and over $400,000 in 2013.

Also joining the top 300 are fellow bracelet winners Allyn Jaffrey Shulman and Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy.

Exiting the top 300 this week are 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Ryan Riess, Carlos Mortensen, Tony Cousineau, Nick Verkaik, Ramzi Jelassi, Amit Makhija, Marcel Luske, and Robert Salaburu, among others.

With a sixth-place finish in the PCA Super High Roller, 2013 WSOP One Drop High Roller champion Tony Gregg rocketed up 92 spots to No. 184. Fabian Quoss, the winner of the Super High Roller, moved up 37 spots, and Matt Glantz (34) and Antonio Esfandiari (35) improved their ranks as well.

Roland Israelashvilli plummets 131 spots this week, coming in at No. 251. Israelashvilli, who reached the final table of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship in 2012, only had one six-figure score in 2013.
