McEvoy, Phillips, Kroon & More to Represent the Senior Poker Tour
There’s a new poker tour in town, and its inaugural event will take place from Jan. 15-19, 2014 at the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica, Miss. The Senior Poker Tour (SPT) is designed for adults 50 and older, and will be represented by a team of pros that includes Poker Hall of Famers Tom McEvoy and Linda Johnson; professionals Jan Fisher, Marsha Waggoner and Susie Isaacs; online legend Mark “P0ker Ho” Kroon; and 2008 World Series of Poker third-place finisher Dennis Phillips.
“The tour provides a venue to feature senior players with a traveling series filled with a wide variety of games that many grew up on. Our series not only includes Texas Hold'em, but includes daily mixed games of Omaha 8, Stud 8, H.O.R.S.E., and pot-limit Omaha," said Lupe Soto, CEO of the SPT.
Vice President of SPT Hal Coblentz added, "With the increase in population of poker players over 50 in the industry, it only makes sense to feature this segment of the poker world. By bringing an SPT tour to some of the top casinos in the country, we hope to support and recognize this segment of the industry allowing competition at its best amongst their peers."
The first stop will feature 17 events with buy-ins ranging from $150-$550 culminating with the multi-day $550 buy-in main championship event. The winner of the $550 SPT Championship will win an entry to the WSOP Circuit Tunica Circuit Main Event (Value $1675) in addition to the prize money of the tournament itself. Additionally, the winners of the SPT $340 Omaha Hi/Lo Championship and $340 H.O.R.S.E. Championship will win entries to the WSOP Circuit Omaha Hi/Lo and the WSOP Circuit H.O.R.S.E. events on January 28th and 29th respectively.
“I joined the SPT because I loved the idea of a tour with a variety of different tournaments not just hold’em,” Kroon told PokerNews. Besides the World Series of Poker where can you play H.O.R.S.E., Omaha, and 7 Card Stud? The fact that it’s for players 50 and older, well it will be nice not getting three-bet every hand. The buy-ins are also very reasonable and should attract a large field. The prize pools should be great!”
“I feel like I will bring a lot of fun and excitement to the SPT,” he continued. “I am on the younger side at 50 and love to talk it up at the tables. I really have a passion for the game, and I really want to thank the SPT for this opportunity. After this year at the WSOP — with my deep run in the Seniors Event finishing 25th out of 4,400 and being chip leader in the Main Event for the first two days — I am so excited about getting back to playing every day. Look out Tunica, I'm not going there to fold. Playing in tournaments every day without a table full of young Internet kids re-raising every hand should be every poker players dream.”
Upcoming SPT series to be held at Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas in April and Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno in August. “We are in talks with several poker rooms around the country and hope to have the added stops published soon.” said Soto concluded.
