Global Poker Index: Ole Schemion Returns to #1, Daniel Negreanu Tumbles From Top 10

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

2014 GPI Player of the Year

Keven Stammen continued to stand atop the Player of the Year race this week, but there was a major shakeup directly below him. Alex Bilokur, Mukul Pahuja and Ole Schemion made giant leaps in the standings, all picking up big scores in in major events during the past week. Schemion (first place) and Bilokur (third) each made the final table of the EPT Sanremo High Roller, and Pahuja finished runner-up in the World Poker Tour Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown, his fourth top-eight finish during the tour's 12th season.

Also joining the top 10 this week was Shyam Srinivasan, fresh off three deep runs at EPT Sanremo. His best result was a second-place finish in the €2,000 8-Handed event for €28,000.

GPI 300 Top 10

Daniel Negreanu plummeted 11 spots to No. 12 this week in the GPI 300 this week. Negreanu's victory at the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific Main Event, where he collected his fifth bracelet, dropped into Period 3 of the GPI formula. Coincidentally, his sixth bracelet win, which came at the WSOP Europe six months later, aged into Period 2. Those aging scores resulted in a massive blow to Negreanu's GPI score. He'll look to recapture those lost points at the upcoming EPT Grand Final and World Series of Poker.

Ole Schemion didn't need any help to reclaim the top spot in the rankings. The 21-year-old added another major title to his resume by winning the EPT High Roller. We'll see if he can increase his lead with another deep run in Monte Carlo this week.

Mukul Pahuja made his first appearance in the top 10 of the GPI 300 this week, climbing 13 spots to No. 7. As mentioned above, Pahuja has been on fire in the past year, reaching final tables at four major tournaments including three on the WPT.

Welcome to the GPI

Blair Hinkle made his return to the GPI 300 after his historic victory at the WSOP Circuit Council Bluffs Main Event. Hinkle won the event for the third time in five years, taking home $90,770 in prize money.

Among those falling from the GPI ranks this week were Isaac Haxton, Tony Cousineau, Blake Bohn, Ryan Riess, and Phil Hellmuth.

Biggest Gains

Jorma Nuutinen was the biggest climber in the GPI 300 this week after finishing ninth in the EPT Sanremo Main Event for €41,930. Nuutinen has now made three EPT Main Event final tables since December.

Barry Hutter moved up to No. 131 in the GPI rankings after his eighth-place finish at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown.

Biggest Drops

Timothy Adams was among the biggest fallers again this week. Adams has only one cash so far in 2014, a 93rd-place finish in a side event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, and saw his fifth-place result at the 2013 WSOP-Europe High Roller age into Period 2 of the GPI formula.

Daniel Weinman is skating dangerously close to the GPI 300 border after dropping 69 places to No. 277 this week. The American pro saw his fourth-place finish in the 2013 WSOP-C New Orleans Main Event age into Period 3.
