Global Poker Index: Schemion, Seiver Still Lead; Negreanu Rejoins Overall Top 10

Daniel Negreanu

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player’s results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

Scott Seiver retained the top spot this week in the 2015 Global Poker Index Player of the Year race, a position he has held now for four weeks running.

Meanwhile there was some movement behind him, including two newcomers joining the 2015 POY Top 10. Nicholas Petrangelo jumped from No. 18 to No. 6 this week after finishing fourth out of 636 entries in the C$2,500 no-limit hold’em event at the Fallsview Poker Classic. And after notching cashes this month at the WPT Lucky Hearts Open and WSOP Circuit West Palm Beach Main Event, Jason Mercier has moved from No. 12 to No. 7.

Shannon Shorr also enjoyed a big jump in the POY rankings this week, moving up from No. 43 all of the way to No. 11 after cashing in that aforementioned Fallsview Poker Classic preliminary event, then also making the money in the World Poker Tour Fallsview Poker Classic Main Event won by Anthony Zinno. Zinno likewise enjoyed a big boost, catapulting from No. 285 to No. 40 this week in the POY rankings.

Another quiet week at the top of the overall GPI rankings this week, with Ole Schemion continuing to lead the rest of the field by a decent-sized margin for a 10th-straight week.

Following his successes earlier this month at the European Poker Tour Deauville, Davidi Kitai now sits in third position just behind Pratyush Buddiga. Meanwhile Daniel Negreanu this week finds himself back in the overall top 10, nudging Stephen Chidwick from the list as the latter fell from No. 8 to No. 11 this week.

Negreanu, whose career tournament earnings of just under $30 million puts him first in the all-time money list, is of course among those who have previously held the No. 1 position in the overall GPI rankings. While he has been either near the top 10 or comfortably inside it almost constantly since mid-2013, Negreanu’s last instance of being ranked first was in April 2014.
