Claudio Moya Wins Latin American Poker Tour Peru Main Event; Scott Davies Takes High Roller

Claudio Moya

The Latin American Poker Tour Peru Main Event wrapped up late Tuesday at the Atlantic City casino in Lima, and after a long final day and nearly four hours’ worth of heads-up poker, Claudio Moya of Chile came away with the trophy and a $135,576 first prize following a heads-up deal.

Moya came out on top of a 366-entry field in the $2,500 buy-in tournament, outlasting Chadi Moustapha of Lebanon to with the trophy and largest share of the $807,396 prize pool. The 51-year-old businessman bettered a 14th-place showing in the same LAPT Peru Main Event last year for which he earned $9,880, Moya’s best previous cash.

The final table was somewhat atypical for the LAPT both because of its length (lasting about 10 hours) and because no players from the host country appeared among the final eight. Jose Espinoza was Peru’s highest finisher in the event, placing 11th.

Moya entered the final day with the chip lead, lost it only briefly early on, then entered heads-up versus Moustapha with a better than 3-to-1 chip advantage. The pair battled for a short while, then paused the tournament with Moya ahead about 4.53 million to Moustapha’s 2.67 million. Despite the chip difference, the pair agreed to an even split of $120K apiece leaving $15,876 for which to play.

Moustapha then gained a quick double-up after flopping a set of fours to take the lead away from Moya, and the Lebanese player would keep the lead for most of the three-plus hours they’d play thereafter. But then Moya flopped a straight versus Moustapha’s pocket aces to earn a big double-up, then Moustapha pushed with QJ versus Moya’s A4 and the better hand held to give Moya the win.

The hand in which Moya cracked Moustapha’s aces was similar to the one that ended the previous day of play when Moya knocked out Patricio Rojas, winner of the LAPT Peru Main Event in Season 6, in ninth place ($15,420) after flopping a straight to crack Rojas’s pocket kings.

Others cashing in the event included two-time LAPT Main Event champion Leiv Kare Johannessen (13th, $11,060), Andres “gmcrafter” Herrera (15th, $9,760), Fabian Ortiz (25th, $6,380), David Vamplew (32nd, $4,760), Patrick Mahoney (42nd, $3,960), and Ale “allecorrea” Braga (45th, $3,960).

Also on Tuesday in Lima, 2014 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific Main Event champion Scott Davies won the $5,000 buy-in High Roller event, besting a 37-entry field to earn a $57,363 first prize.

Other side event winners in the series included a couple of former LAPT Main Event champions, Alex Manzano who won the $200 PLO event and Mario Lopez who won the $1,100 NLHE re-entry, and former LAPT Player of the Year Amos Ben who took down the $600 NLHE Deepstack Turbo.

Season 8 of the Latin American Poker Tour next moves to Punta del Este for the LAPT8 Uruguay series running September 18-22, 2015. Then in late November and December comes the LAPT Grand Final in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which as recently announced will be running alongside the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) Millions festival.
