UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up: 2015 WSOP Bracelet #3 For The Brits
It's time again for the UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up, your one-stop shop for all the poker and gambling news from the UK and Ireland over the past seven days.
This week's recap is dominated by the fantastic news that the UK has three bracelet winners so far at the 2015 World Series of Poker (WSOP). John Gale and Benny Glaser have already been congratulated in previous editions of the round-up, and now it's time for Alex Lindop to get in the spotlight.
Lindop took down Event #59: $1,500 No Limit Hold'em for a massive career-best score of $531,037, and you can read about how he did it here.
There was a victory in the online world, too, this one going to Ben "jenbizzle" Jones, who walked away with the title of PokerStars Sunday Rebuy champion, proving you don't always have to head to Las Vegas to win big sums of money.
Jones' weekend win saw him jump into the top 20 of the UK online poker rankings, while in the live version of those rankings — namely the Global Poker Index — Simon Deadman's excellent 2015 WSOP has resulted in him climbing into second place in the UK and 28th in the world, the latter being his highest place since the GPI's inception.
Much of this week's news has been away from the tables, but thankfully the majority of it has been positive, which is always a good thing.
PokerStars announced it is going to open its popular All-In Kitchen for the second time, with Bristol being the city of choice. The world's largest online poker site then unveiled the schedule for the 11th edition of the MicroMillion festival, which will see at least $5 million awarded across 100 low buy-in events.
Onto the business side of things now and Mansion Group, owners of Mansion Poker, becoming the shirt sponsors of the newly promoted English Premier League team, Bournemouth. Mansion had previously sponsored fellow Premier League team, Tottenham Hotspur.
There also good news for British bookmaker Betfred, which announced massive profits of £593 million, while Playtech — owners of the iPoker Network — continued to diversify its product range by acquiring Ava Trade for $105 million.
We also discovered that the gambling industry in the UK is worth a staggering £7.1 billion per year thanks to a study by the UK Gambling Commission. Meanwhile, the only black spot on this week's news comes in the form of a casino closure that is set to cost 50 people their jobs.
