UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up: Scotsman Wins Sunday Million

UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up

There has been plenty of activity over at our UK & Ireland PokerNews site this past week and if you missed it the first time around you can catch up with all of the latest happenings in this week's UK & Ireland PokerNews Round-Up.

The week kicked off with the fantastic news that someone sporting the Union Jack of the United Kingdom had taken top honors in the PokerStars Sunday Million. Scotland's "CantWinAFlip" must have finally won a flip because he emerged victorious from a field of more than 5,000 players to net himself $174,951.74. The UK & Ireland-centric Sunday Briefing has details of the win and the other big scores enjoyed by players calling the UK and Ireland home.

Each week, we compile a top 20 list of online poker tournament players, as ranked by PocketFives, for both the UK and Ireland. There was something of a reshuffling of the pack this week as several of those highly ranked players enjoyed big scores at the virtual felt. "Bunkervogel" was the sole new name among the UK Top 20, making his debut in 11th place.

In other news, 888poker and Aspers Casino Stratford signed a branding deal that is to last 12 months. Under the terms of the deal, 888poker branding will adorn the walls of Aspers' vast poker room, and we expect there to be live qualifiers at Aspers for 888poker-run live events, although this is still to be confirmed.

Speaking of Aspers, next week it will be packed full of eager poker players looking to get their hands on a coveted Amateur Poker Association & Tour bracelet. The 2016 APAT World Championship of Amateur Poker is the largest ever run by the tour with 22 events across 10 days. Buy-ins range from £55 to £220, and you can find the full schedule right here.

In the live poker world, Reyaaz Mulla became the latest in a long line of players to win a Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Main Event. Mulla triumphed in the Manchester Main Event and took him £58,300 after a heads-up deal with former European Poker Tour Barcelona champion Tom Middleton.

The most eagerly anticipated live poker event of the year has to be the inaugural Global Poker League, and while dates are still being confirmed, we decided to start taking a look at the franchises who are competing for the title of champion. Finally, bookmakers in the UK have been under pressure of late due to increased taxes, which have resulted in poor trading figures. Irish gambling giant bucked that trend this week when it announced it had enjoyed revenues of more than €1 billion for the first time in its history. Read more about that here.
