In 1983, poet, poker player, theatre critic, rock climber, and novelist Al Alvarez published The Biggest Game in Town, an account of the 1981 World Series of Poker, won by Stuey Ungar...
I met Alvarez on Fremont St many years ago (long before it was covered). I had asked Tony Holden to sign his book for me, and Al was with him. Tony H introduced this smiling, mild mannered man to me and we conversed for a couple of minutes about poker. It was not until some years later whilst taking my English Language/Literature degree that I recognised the name - and realised that I had been in the presence of such a great man. When I take my annual trip to Vegas, and walk along the now covered Fremont St., I often think of that occasion with fond memory. I feel lucky to have met, not only a great literary/poker figure, but also a wonderfully humble and awe inspiring man.
