If Senator Bill Frist thought that the inclusion of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) into the Safe Port Act would play well to the conservative base, he may have miscalculated. Today's New York Times Opinion-Editorial page...
"The statement might be some what more surprising if Charles Murray didn't confess that he plays poker on four different internet sites. But in that respect he makes his case; he is just one more member of the conservative base who feels alienated and disillusioned by the new law."
I would believe even if Charles Murray did not play poker he would still write the article. The Conservative movement in the US is not a monolothic group as often portrayed in the MSM as a bunch of Bible thumpers trying to enforce morality through the power of the state. Conservative come in many different flavours:
1: Libertarians. Charles Murray is a libertarian. Libertarians want minimial gov't interference in people's lives both economics and personal. Other prominent libertarians would be Milton Friedman, and Congressman Ron Paul from Texas.
2: Neoconservatives: Former liberals who got disasatisified with the perceived weakness of the Democratic Party in fighting the Cold War and now the War on Terror. Prominent members were/are the Kristol's, Jean Kirkpartick and Paul Wolfowitz. They do not much care about domestic policy but are for a vigourous aggressive US foreign policy often with Wilsonian overtones.
3: Paleocons: Conservatives who really want to turn back the clock to the 1920s or earlier including an noninterventionist foreign policy, distrust of large corporations, and dismantling of the welfare state. Pat Buchnanan would be a prominent example.
4: Social Conservatives: Wants to defend and enhance their traditional beliefs within society. As in the case of this law, willing to use governement power to tell people what they can and cannot do if such activity violated their moral codes. This is the Christian Coalition.
As you can this is actually a great wedge issue that splinters Conservatives in the US. Frist might of satisfied (4) but he really pissed off (1).
I have always voted Republican. I cannot wait until November. I live in S.C. and I plan to lobby for the other side because of this and other issues. No need to get mad just vote out these fools that do not represent me. This has really UPSET ME. I have fought in two wars and served more than 24 years in the military. Now I am told I am not free to relax and play a little poker in my living room ( now that I have one after spending many cold wet nights in places all over the world as is the norm with the infantry ). So now I am told I must to go to another country to be free to make that decision . HA HA HA
I am all in with you Kerry. My GOP Congressman was a co-sponsor of this crap legislation so I will not be voting for him, I have had problems with him on other major issues, although he is pretty safe in one of the gerrymandered districts.
PS: Thank you for your service.
PSS: Did you serve in the Korean War?
I have only too recently had discussions on electing government officials and it has finally come down to the fact, that my ONLY choice....is to vote for myself.
I can not stand for the hypocritical attitude that our government has towards gambling.
I live in the state that bosts the WORLDS LARGEST CASINO...Foxwoods. I can get in my truck and go play poker at a place that CT uses to attract tourists, but now I can not enjoy the same pleasure from the comfort and convienence of my own home.
To illustrate the Hypocracy even furhter.....There was a time when Donald Trump had wanted to build a Casino / Convention center in Hartford CT, after the city became a virtual ghost town, when G Fox and the Whalers left. The project would have created jobs and brought revenue to a beliguered city and state, but the government refused the offer on account that it did not want Connecticut to be known as a Gambling State.....(note the irony that Foxwoods presents).
In the same press conference, the state official announced that there would now be TWO daily number lottery drawings. One at mid day and one in the evening, so now CT residents had twice the chance to win money............
Um.......Isn't that gambling???
If anyone knows of a petition or action that can be taken to voice our outrage to this legislation, please post it and let me know.
We are the only ones who can create change. It is time for OUR voice to be heard so we need to shout louder than the whiney have not's who only seem interested in telling others what they CAN"T do.
