On August 10th, Jamie Gold won the 2006 World Series of Poker main event. Mr. Gold soon had issues collecting his $12 million in winnings, but those problems were recently resolved out of court...
Harrah's will probably get all of this in line as to not compromise the integrity of the WSOP brand, especially right before they're large, multi-billion dollar buyout is finalized. It just goes to show you that you should really be putting your most trusted people in charge of large denomination color-ups. The WSOP was full of mishaps all year but, that's what you get when you have a few thousand temporary employees and ten times as many players.
Harrahs has a number of incentives to find that it was an "innocent mistake". When you get caught with your pants down, pull them up and deny it ever happened. That is the strategy employed in these situations. There will be no heads to roll. There almost never is.
I find it impossible to believe that Kevin O'Donnell (or any player, for that matter) received an extra million chips and didn't notice. How many chips did he have before and after break? At that point in the tourney, Gold was the runaway leader. The bump in O'Donnell's stack must have been 25%+, right?
To look no further than who received the extra chips is folly. I don't know if that's what the investigators did, but that's what it appears to be to me. My concern would also include the player the recipient eventually lost it to. I would never consider the investigation complete until they looked into where the players went and who they talked to during that color up break. Instead of it possibly being a two person scheme (employee and player) it could very well have been a three person conspiracy.
