TV Poker's Annoying Effect on Poker

I'm starting this thread to discuss what effect TV poker has had on poker that annoys everybody. I don't mean this to simply bash televised poker because without it, the number of players live or online would not be what they are. What I'm talking about is the new wave of players that have to emulate what they've seen on TV. From the dress to the attitude and actions. Certain phrases can be heard in poker rooms around the globe because somebody heard a player say it on TV.

So what annoys everyone?

biggest problem I see is the fact that most shows show only the FT, and only the moment a shorty has to move all in, they think it's normal to shove with AJs, A3s, 66 etc in early levels... that's my most annoying part.

The "one time" bit, and other things (like the way they dress or whatever) is a thing I like, because it tells me they usually have NO IDEA how to play Cha cha call it a pokertable version of a neon sign Cha cha
I need a girlfriend who loves me for my money... and is pretty bad with math.

I agree 100%.

Not to mention calling an all-in at any time with similar hands.

In the other hand this is the price to pay to make this sport ( specifically NLH and not poker in general ) so popular and therefore creates opportunities for every players to have a game to play in.

Without TV and all the bad things that are going with it, there is no internet poker as we know it, there is not a tounrnament or a sit n go to start every minute at every level, there is no bar league where you can find several tournaments ( free as gambling is not legal ) with 80+ players every day in Raleigh North Carolina.

To go with all the "bad" things that go with TV, we get also a lot of "good" things. And as far as I am concerned, the best thing was to discover the game ( on TV ).

My post is probably a bit of topic but it is important to remember the positive too.

What annoys me the most about TV poker is........I like it......Once you realize that you are watching an extremely edited portion of the game remember that there are millions of people who otherwise wouldn't be exposed to the game. of poker... They are our bread and butter. We now have celebrity status and recognition..... Sponsorships and endorsements. These were not there pre-Moneymaker. Now if we can get some prime-time exposure on the big networks instead of late night filler.....New money ...fresh fish....MORE FOR EVERYBODY!!! LOL DIRT ;}

personally I like poker on tv, specially after they WSOP* events, the online market is saturated with bad players trying to play like what they have just seen. I try to take advantage of those days at the cash table.

Ye I'd like to see more of the action from days 1 & 2 when the good players go about building their stacks.

The problem is, that action just isn't as exciting in the TV sense, and there's very little way to determine which out of all those players will make it deep. All the cameras can do is pick a few big names and hope they get lucky.

Does anybody remember when they televised a full tournament? I believe it was sponsored by FullTilt. I think that will be the last time that happens. One long boring show.

I like watching it because I don't get to play very often anymore and I enjoy the game. I dislike that we seldom see the different varieties of poker unless it is WSOP time. I think a PLO HL tourney would be more exiciting to watch than a NLHE tourney.

I hate the mutt and jeff act of commentators. as a fish (at present), I would prefer to just listen to a professional trying to second guess the players and explaining his reasoning. I definitely don't need the mutt telling me "how exciting!", "how intelligent!", "How intuitive!" each player is, at every play.

I agree with but they try to get an audience new to poker who might be looking more for excitement than a purely technical aspect of the game...

i will guess you are talking about ESPN, maybe the WPT is better as Mike Sexton go a bit deeper in the hand.

I want to see more of the games from day 1 and day 2. But it's TV and they wouldn't draw enough viewers if they didn't edit it to entertain large groups of people.

(live as well as tv) I'm not talking suits tuxedos etc but plain comfortable clothes with a few less ads would possibly be less offensive .pros who ARE PRO'S by the way yes I recognise their ability but everytime they lose a pot they are as graceful as you would expect someone who actually believes what he thinks of himself would be ,or everyone is against me winge ,but then as soon as they spike the river they throw around their greatness anthem in case we missed it or possibly didn't recognise their greatness because if they don't tell us how great they are how will we know ? WHERE ARE THE OLD SCHOOL PLAYERS GONE
