Raises in EP and LP

Your opinion

Do you think it is better to raise a bit more ( sizewise ) in EP than LP or the other way around?

Do you think there is more value in making a raise slightly bigger than usual in EP to maybe take the blinds without contest or reduce the field and slightly smaller in LP to use position on the next round and "invite" maybe one more weak holding to the party?

Or the contrary,

Do you think there is more value to raise less in EP as you don t make a lot of money from EP and raise a bit more in LP as this where you are the most likely to win pots?

i think this depends greatly on how wide your range is in EP and LP.

for example, I play a pretty wide range compared to most in EP, esp. when the blinds get higher. Because of this I tend to make my EP raises 2.5 to 3 bb and no higher. This way when I get raised preflop I am no risking a large amount of chips.

in LP I actually make my raises 3.5 to 4 bb because peoplea re very suspicious of late positions raises. I want to make it tough for them to raise me from the blinds. Also, this means even though I am very active given the right dynamics I am playing larger pots in position and smaller pots OOP.

Keep in mind I do this when/if i am playing more hands than your average TAG. If i decide to tighten up I pretty much just raise the uniform 3bb from any position.
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.

These types of questions are sooo dependant...and I don't want to give you answers until one of us reaches 4 games won!

(as always, this is my experience with cash games at the low limits)

In EP, I think the most important thing is to mix it up and actually play looser. For example, most people will fold the same to either a min bet or 4xbb. I know because I min bet a ton. However, if someone has a hand, they are most likely going raise both hands the same. So, in early position, I think you can be a lot more creative with how you play a hand. You can mix it up more and get results of not allowing your opponent to put you on a hand very easily. Then I actually think being the first one to bet after the flop is an advantage.

In LP, I think it is harder to be as creative, especially if you were raised preflop. I am much more consistant with my bets here. If a lot of limpers, I raise more. If only the blinds, I raise less.

Anyways, just my little bit of experience. It will change depending on the level you are playing though.
