CMU.....Why Bother?

I've seen this discussed in the shoutbox today so I decided to start a thread for proper discussion. Forgive me if I don't quote the shoutbox directly or give credit to who said what.

Why bother listing an event on CMU?

Variance, variance, variance. CMU can help a player get through the variance that is natural in MTTs. By reducing the cost of each tournament, the player can play more MTTs using the same bankroll.

Too small of a bankroll. While CMU can help a player play a larger tournament than their bankroll would allow, continuous listings of events that are beyond the player's bankroll without success will chase away investors. So to continue to be able to play in these larger buy in tournaments, the player has to actually perform.

Isn't this just saying that the player doesn't have enough confidence in himself? Confidence has nothing to do with variance. Very successful online professionals list events on CMU. Does this mean they lack confidence in their game? No. They've just played long enough to know that shit happens and while poker has a skill factor, it is still gambling. There is variance.

So, what are the other opinions of why would you want to list an event on CMU?

my reason is just that I want to play stuff that I KNOW I can compete in. I won't play the 25k high roller, I will only play stuff I can see myself getting deep in.

so for me it's the small BR argument, I will only list events that are too expensive for my BR, never events that are ok for me to play, so will list the 80k gtd, but not the sunday quarter million.

I need a girlfriend who loves me for my money... and is pretty bad with math.

I haven't listed on CMU yet, but will soon. (I know, who would buy shares in me.) Part of what you got out of the shoutbox today was me harassing Tony. After all, is there a better player in the world than him? But, in all seriousness, I think the main reason is the one you hit on Dave, variance. If I am going to invest in someone, I would much rather invest in someone who has a package. As a result, the variance is lessened.

As for me, I am looking to get staked in smaller events that I could buy into anyways. The reason I am going to start this way is that I feel as though there will be less pressure and a way for me to get comfortable with the concept. Down the road, I will want to play in some of the other events such as HORSE and 8-game and in the big series, would need a couple backers.

So, all seriousness aside. (get it, it is a joke). CMU is a good thing as long as people follow your basic advice! I also think it is smart to have multiple events in one package to help!

Anyways, best of luck to all you guys! My tylenol PM is kicking in.

CMU is great for every weak/good/intermediate/great player!

Weak players can play in more events, because sooner or later they'll be busted (because they are WEAK!)

Good players can play in bigger events from time to time and they'll suffer lower variance!

Intermediate players - I think pretty same like 'good' players

Great players can play in almost every tourney for about 50% ot eventual winnings BUT to play in the event they'll pay from 0 to 10/15% ot the buy in...

Of course this is very short review of what CMU can do for you!

Personally i think chipmeup only works for players that want to improve their game.

???

This morning I woke and said to myself, I really don t want to improve my game, enough is enough. That would be so unfair to everybody else if I improve too much.

believe it or not their are people who don't bother to improve their game.

on de dutch site of pn we ot a section called "procenten en Oacking" and their are people selling % of their game but if you give them critics on how the play they are offended.
Those people sell % every week but they keep making the same mistakes.

Investing in such players is burning money.

ok ok I see, yes, but I don t think a player should modify his game because a backer says he should play different. A player should play his game ( and try to improve it ) but if he doesn t than backers should be able to be wise and stop investing on him

akamma - indeed! Nobody is obliged too buy from someone. You think its good investment so you buy, you don't think that so you don't buy. Is that simple.

I know.

But on pokernews.nl this is not the case, they keep buying of eachother just for fun and then it doesn''t work in my opinion.

And i think that if you're a decent player the only time you should sell some action is when you play a tournemant above your bankroll.

I understand your point but this is not always the case. If it was, why would Micon or Tony G sell shares?

How about because they are sponsored players and get their share of the cake?

Wow frenchie, 4 posts that say the same thing to get across your point. In the end, all different types of players use CMU. The one piece of advice I can give anyone those is to not let me buy shares in you...it is an automatic loss!

I might. I am running low on funds at PS because that is the account I am using to stake everyone. I have been playing everything on UB which is where most of my money is now. When I get on thursday night, I will win the $4 in a cash game and then send to you.
