Handling calling stations and maniacs :E

You know the guy who plays absolutely appaulingly, whether his weakness is calling or raising doesn't matter here, just that he does one or the other the vast majority of the time.

Unless they get very lucky, that particular player will lose chips to me. That's a given.

But what I'm noticing is that when I'm at the table with a particularly consistant calling station or maniac, my proffit from the rest of the table goes down dramatically (frequently into the negatives).

The presence of a calling station means I can't bluff anyone else because this guy is still in the hand. And the maniac forces me to fold in a lot of situations where I could otherwise have an expected proffit.

Is there a trick to playing at a table with a calling station/maniac, something more effective than falling back on playing straight forward abc poker?

Here's something else I'm noticing, and I don't really want to admit to believing this because I know goes against common wisdom but I'm convinced I'm right. Sitting to the immediate left of a maniac is the worst seat at the table. I win big with them on my left and lose/break even with them on my right. Here's why: If they raise most pots, and you're next to act, you've got the whole table to act behind you. If you choose to make a stand, you've still got to get through four or five other players behind you and frequently they'll be limp-raising the maniac and you'll be caught in between. Quite simply, being to their left makes you first to act in as many pots as he raises.

And post flop even out of position you know what he's going to do a good amount of the time, because of this I'd rather play him out of position than have to call a raise or make a re-raise with half of the table behind me on every hand that I choose to play.

Any thoughts ???Smile

the "weakness" does matter, greatly. there are effective was to play loose-aggressive as well as loose-passive. you will approach these two players COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

Nothing is a given in poker. I would be willing to bet that I could play a six max table with you and limp/call 90% of hands preflop and still make money off of you.

Most players react as you do. They tighten up and play ABC which means there are less spots for you to make money off of them. The majority of those spots are then dominated by the loose player. Thats why people can profit from playing loose. The table simply reacts incorrectly and he forces them into mistakes.

Against a calling station your strategy should be to value betting more often and size your bets correctly. There are often times you can get three streets of value from middle pair against a calling station. I often make my bets a little larger against calling stations because they wont noticed the difference. This is will improve your profit against them.

Figure out how to trap the maniac. Pay close attention to his bets. It may look like he is betting overly-aggressive everytime with no regard for bet sizing or his own stack. Most often, those assumptions are wrong. Pay close attention to what boards he bets big on and which ones he bets small. check his bet sizing and see if it differs whether he has a hand or no. is he folding to 3-bets preflop? While I presonally don't like to get into wars preflop often times you can stack some of the sggression out of guys if you 3-bet them preflop a cule of times. Most important against a maniac is let him bluff you when you have a hand. Often times even making a small bet will get a maniac to make a big raise if he think you will fold. TRAP HIM!

I am of the opinion that ABC is only optimal if you are multi-tabling. Otherwise the most effective strategy is purely opponent based. Your style should be based on what is most effective against your opponents.

Quite simply, being to their left makes you first to act in as many pots as he raises.

So you are saying the maniacs dont have an edge on you if you show aggression first? Which means the manaiacs you are facing dont know how to react when someone fights back. Your idea of being on the right of a maniac is redonkulous but perhaps you just play better in that position and you play worse when you are in-position.

And post flop even out of position you know what he's going to do a good amount of the time, because of this I'd rather play him out of position than have to call a raise or make a re-raise with half of the table behind me on every hand that I choose to play.

If you are on the button and the maniac is in the cutoff how can half the table be behind you to play?

What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.
