We finally have all the players in the 2005 WSOP in one room. This was a Herculean accomplishment, and the Harrah's WSOP, and house staff must be commended for the job they have done.
yeah, its a nice pay-off, but not what it should be. what was it? five, six, seven years ago, mike sexton came up with a new payout schedule based on the idea that the top end was too heavy. lately, ive seen mike caro now espousing a view for a payout schedule more the way it originally was. the winner gets somewhere between 40-50%. i gotta agree, you come through a field of over 5500 and you get less than 15%? whats wrong with this picture?
From the information I have looked over, Al Berchielli is out, unfortunately.
sky, you bring up a good point. It is a little ridiculous that this year's champion will barely get 15% of the total purse, but (and this is a trend in larger tournaments) those running the tournaments feel that if more players are paid off, then it will encourage more players to take their shot. I have a feeling that we should get used to the trend of more payouts in exchange for a lower championship check.
I respectfully disagree. You must remember a fundamental fact of poker. A great deal of "luck" is involved in poker. In a heads-up ..(lol).. Home run derby against Barry Bonds you stand NO CHANCE. Its safe to call this homerun derby a game of PURE SKILL. Now poker... we all know that skill is a part of it, but in a field so big (5500+) your skill will only take you so far, and your luck will carry you the rest of the way. The payouts shouldnt be exponential with 1st getting 50%. Not taking away from the person who got 1st.... but its not like they are the Jesus Christ, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Doyle Brunson ..(lol).. of poker. They definatly deserve the credit but i wouldnt necessarily call the 2005 WSOP champ the best player to every play and i wouldnt say they deserve all the money.
Heres an example....
Say your in the 2005 WSOP of poker right now. The announcer just says "congrads your all in the money". Now with a top heavy prizepool all that money is a few lucky hands away. Now with a more Mike Sexton suported version you get a nice gradually increased payout that includes a healthy life changing top end. This way your skill gets you as close as you can and rewards you as each bustout means youve clawed your way that much closer. As close as your skill can bring you.. My 2 cents.
