I really like all the info here but I think I remember something like this a couple months back. I remember I put in a comment then and still feel the same way. Just wondering why the repeat.

Anmne - The piece a couple months back had to do with Video Poker - Specifially a guy who was forced to destory a bunch of VP machines he owned. Nevertheless, we are always going to run updates on states where legislation is an issue. I think this is an ongoing thing, and updates are relevant.

DAMN LIBERALS! I don't know who's running that state but it sounds like a pretty liberal thing to do. The government there is just mad because they don't make money off of it. Pretty soon we're gonna have to pay taxes to play the game.

i keep seeing stories like this pop up all the time from all over the place, and i just keep trying to understand what the big deal is, but no matter how much i turn it over in my head, i just cant fathom what LEA/govt's problem is with these free, amateur poker tournaments...

ive participated from time to time in some of these locally (dallas, tx) area, and honestly, what goes on at them barely qualifies as poker anyhow

anyhow, what i cant get is... its FREE! so what is the powers-that-be's issue? NONE of the traditional objections to "gambling" apply with regard to these events, any more than they would to a trivia persuit competition at a local bar that awarded prizes to the winners... the participants in either game have risked exactly the same thing: nothing!

you cant really trot out the gambling addiction excuse, because, well, theres no gambling. if you get addicted to amateur poker, how is that any different than being addicted to the local bridge or dominoes club?

cant really bring up the "deprives the state of revenue" because, again, no money...

forget about the organized crime concerns, those guys like money too last i checked.

i mean, what is the f'ing deal? is it because the game is played with CARDS? or did i miss the part in the bible where baby jesus said that playing a game that resembles a gambling game is wrong and makes him cry?

laws and those who make/enforce them are supposed to be about protecting people, we voluntarily give up some personal freedom in exchange for their protection... but WTF exactly is this protecting us from? what public good does this serve?
