It's the most wonderful time of the year -- for poker players that is. The 42nd Annual World Series of Poker opens its doors to poker players from around the world today. In preparation, the team at PokerNews HQ has been finalizing schedules, teams, and more, but we also took time to peer into our crystal ball to make some predictions. Here are the 2011 WSOP PokerNews Staff Predictions. (Note: These picks are for entertainment purposes only -- unless we're right, in which case, you might not ever hear the end of it.)

Which under-the-radar player will be...
I like your predictions for the most part.
Sarah, I think you're crazy on your pick of who will win Player Of The Year. I don't think Katchalov is a great player...I see him cashing in just 3 events.
Here's mine if you're curious
----------------------------
Which under-the-radar player will be the biggest surprise? - Keep an eye out for the young female players like Melanie Weisner and Lauren Kling. I think they're getting their roll going and can be big factors. I was impressed with the way Melanie played on Poker After Dark, but she did talk a LOT. I expect both to make a final table or two...and maybe a small shot at winning. We'll see.
Which big-name pro will be the biggest disappointment? - Allen Cunningham AND Phil Hellmuth. Gut-feeling, but I don't think either will cash a lot.
Who will take down WSOP Player of the Year? - Consensus says Erik Seidel, but I'm gonna go with Andy Frankenberger too. If he can find a way to turn that WPT momentum into WSOP momentum, he will be a force. I got him winning a bracelet and making 5 final tables, 8 cashes...good enough to edge out Erik Seidel.
How many events will Erik Seidel play? Win? - Erik will play 34 events roughly....that's a big if. I'll give him 1 bracelet win and 4 final tables.
How many bracelets will Phil Ivey win? - Just one. We'll go from there. People are saying his mind's not focused...I disagree. Anytime Phil plays, he's a threat to win.
How many entrants are you predicting for the Main Event? - 5,240. This may be high and I could go even higher...but I think the Black Friday will have minimal effect. I still say that whoever decided it was needed to restrict online poker was an idiot....now poker is not the same as it once was.
What will this year be "the year of?" - The women make a BIG statement. I am calling for a record-breaking and almost improbable 5 female players to win bracelets. I got Selbst, Rousso, Weisner, Duke and Kling all winning bracelets. I also have Kara Scott making a deep run in several events and coming close in them.
Which member of Team PokerNews is most likely to win a bracelet? - Consensus says you gotta go Kristy Arnett here. I think she might be poised for a good run in some of the events.
Closing thoughts:For some reason, I don't think online poker will be quite doomed just yet.

Hi Mrs. Holloway
My mom doesn't even know how to use a computer, let alone comment on my article. However, I admit that if she did, she would take an unnecessary interest in my work . . . we're talking 10X more than Bonomo's mom does!

"I don't think Katchalov is a great player"
I agree. $6 million in earnings before the age of 30. He still has a lot to prove.

This will be the 'year of the Brits' at the WSOP. No funky online poker problems for us!!
There are several British players who I think will do well this year - watch out for Jake Cody. I predict the rebirth of the 'Devilfish'! Oh, and a Brit will win the Main Event this year. No question.
