Packing Up to Play Poker: Tijuana, Mexico

Post Reply
Tijuana Mexico

When you think Tijuana, Mexico, thoughts of spring break and tequila no doubt come to mind. One thing you’d be hard pressed to associate with the largest city on the Baja California Peninsula is online poker, but that is exactly what’s happened since the events of Black Friday. Located just across the border from San Diego, California, Tijuana and nearby Rosarito Beach, could become the place to go for online degens eager for action.

One man who opted for Tijuana was San Diego native and poker pro Jason Wheeler. “I had been living in San Diego and had a lot of ties to SD,” he explained. “I...

You are leaving out the very serious problem in Tijuana of Crime. The number of murders is at the highest levels that they ever have been. And lately it is because of the drug cartels that run out of Tijuana and various areas around there. I hear they also been targeting more american tourists and if someone is planning on moving there, I am not sure I would feel safe either. Just food for thought that you didn't add in your glowing review of the area.

Having lived in the TJ area for over 6 years, I can truly say I have never seen, or even heard of, any crime in my neighborhood. It is a regular working-class neighborhood, that houses a few US expats among the local Mexican citizens. In fact, I've met several US expats who came here to escape crimes of robbery and mugging they experienced in their home states - a piece of info the mass media seems to forget to mention! An efficient way to find a good place to live is to pay a Taxi Libre driver (many of whom speak English very well) to take you to the kind of neighborhood you want. The drivers know the areas well. (This is a strategy I first heard of from a taxi driver in Panama.) Just last week, someone used that strategy to find a nice apartment in my neighborhood. Rental prices for quality housing are amazingly low, too. I have quite a reliable 16MB internet connection from Telnor, where support is in English or Spanish. Most businesses take USD or Pesos. And, English is widely spoken because so many from TJ work and go to school in San Diego. I highly recommend TJ and the Baja, whether your interest is online poker or just living a relaxed, retired lifestyle among friendly neighbors.

Chad thanks for plugging my company Baja123.com. Jason if you want we have a local game here in Rosarito Beach that we play 3 to 4 times a month. Great group of Americans right by the ocean...food and drinks . Small game 8-10 people but fun to play and get to know some of the expats. You are more than welcome to come ride with me. Call my office ask for Kanoa and tell them you are calling about the poker news article and they will get a hold of me. Thanks again Chad for the plug and if you are every in Rosarito Beach I owe you a Margarita and a fish taco. Take care guys.

Great Article.
Hi Nudist30 Do you live here?
Tijuana has cleaned up in the last few years, sorry, the mainstream media missed the update. I reside in Tijuana, rent on my apartment is about 150.00US. No one is targeting American tourists Except the Mexican Tourism Board. The police corruption has waned. Cartels want their drug money not a few dollars from a tourist.
Tijuana is much safer than in the 90s. Here I see a 1.6 million people on a peninsula of about 65 sq miles and everyone is working hard to make it to the end of the day. I live in the slums money is tight, but we stick together we help each other out, I see no violence, no crime. I like Nueva Tijuana the people are friendly and willing to help.
This is a Third world country the tap water is not perfect but Reverse Osmosis water is cheap, yes the utilities are stable for the most part. I too use Telnor MX for my interwebs and they have a good long distance plan for US calls.
Home Depot and Walmart are here if you get homesick. It would be nice if the media would make such a story.
If you are ever in Tijuana look for me I am the white guy Smile

While I love Mexico and the Mexican people in general, Tijuana is a dirty smelly cesspool of a town that makes Downtown LA look like Disneyland. That said, if you are a Black Friday affected pro, this does actually make some sense. The drug cartels are definitely not targeting touristas, but there is a lot of in-town crime (thefts, muggings) targeting ole' whitey, around the clubs and bar areas. Personally, I would shoot on over to the beach rather than downtown TJ, but I'm not into 14 year old hookers or donkey shows (anymore). That said, sitting on a balcony overlooking the waves and grinding, while stuffing your face with fish tacos, IS a pretty nice way to spend your day.

Tijuana is a great city IMO. While I do not live there, I like to visit a couple of times a month. My new favorite activity is going to the soccer match. The team in Tijuana, the Xoloitzcuintles, have been promoted to the Primera Division this year, and while they have struggled to a 1-3-2 record so far, the matches have been tight and exciting. Don't forget to toss your beer into the air when they score... you can always buy another one. I also have to admit to being a regular in the Zona Norte. I am 42, and I just love young women. 18 and older though please. LOL. Viva Tijuana.

Tijuana is great yes. There is crime everywhere on both sides of the border. My point is, what ideas you have created due to the negative media in the region are only products of said negative media.

We do have a lot of poker players moving Rosarito beach. there are 4 that I know of living in my complex, Califia resort. I am a realtor and shown to several poker players in the last month. I have lived in Rosarito beach for 4 years and love it. In the states we could never afford a beautiful place on the ocean. Here in baja, the cost of rent, food, gas, restaurants, etc are so much less expensive than in the states. Fowling is a link to an example of what you can get.
