Steve Dannenmann

Perhaps the most iconic or at least most watched World Series of Poker Final Table of all time was in 2005 when a former Australian chiropractor topped a field of 5,619 to claim the world championship and win $7.5 million. Joe Hachem became an overnight star, which continues to shine in the poker world; however, but for the turn of a few cards, another man could be donning the championship gold bracelet. I’m talking of course about Steve Dannenmann.

If you watched the 2005 WSOP Final Table, you no doubt remember the outgoing and awestruck Dannenmann. The CPA from Maryland was simply happy to...

Really... Steve? You play poker for fun yet its boring. Wheres an editor when you need one. Sure, you'll have the common grump at the table. As no enjoys losing money or a large sum for that matter! But you're saying the common poker player is an idiot. You're filled with oxymoron's aren't you? You're a true star Steve... everyone always remembers the runner up ;-)

Good article.
And he's right about a lot of the people sitting at the tables, although I do find poker more interesting than Steve.

Chad peels back Steve like an onion and although there is a glimmer of the love of poker somewhere in there ... you get a great portrait of the GOOD amateur player, who has a life & business outside of poker. His comment about patches etc is a great one, and pretty well true.

As for the desire to have a good time, laugh it up at the poker table ... sure that is ok for a home game but in a REAL poker game where there is serious competition, expecting that good ol back slapping style is too much to ask. It is like comparing a casual football game to pro ball ... you are going to be more focused & probably unsmiling in the pro game because the people are playing for keeps. It might be fair to say that that good ol attitude gave up that little edge that is the difference between 1st place and 2nd place. I enjoy a fun & laughing table as much as anyone but I can tell you that once you are deeper into a serious tournament (my experience in the WPT Paris) not many people are joking around. It is not becuase people are grumpy ... it is because players are competing seriously, thinking hard, & concentrating ... not wasting time shooting the breeze.

Great interview though!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'll try to track down anyone you suggest. There seems to be a lot of requests for Tuan Lam, so I'll do my best to try and get him.
