For someone who doesn't worry about the spotlight much, Phil Ivey was sure in it plenty during 2011. His crazy year began way back in January at the Aussie Millions in Melbourne, Australia, and is still continuing to stir up stories as we speak with the latest news regarding his ex-wife suing him. At one point in the year, Ivey seemingly dropped off the face of the poker planet. He was nowhere to be found but was back on the felt by the end of the year. With our No. 4 story of 2011, PokerNews brings you everything Ivey.
Back in January, Ivey was the face plastered on posters that advertised...
Ivey is always news when he plays ... but putting him on this list, at #4 no less, for NOT PLAYING is nuts. It is interesting that the Epic League ranking system wants to give Doyle a permanent card, yet tosses Ivey, arguably the best poker player in the world, onto the scrap heap. This sort of weird subjective behaviour is what makes the Global league index something to smile at rather than take seriously. Great player, sure ... worthy of the top list in 2011 for doing virtually nothing? Nope. A better pick might well be the fact that an American won a World Poker Tour event outside of the U.S. for the first time (WPT Paris 2011) or some other totally unknown poker player that has made the most final tables this year yet is unknown (look him up, he specializes in 8th places) ... but with all due respect, Phil Ivey took a year off.
