PokerNews Debate: Should the WSOP Continue the November Nine Concept?

Post Reply
2011 November Nine

Prior to revealing the schedule for 2012, the World Series of Poker teased the poker world with various tweets. On Tuesday, the WSOP revealed it would be using 470 tables this summer, nearly 100 more than the year before; that the 2012 WSOP would take place from May 27 to July 16; the off day during the Main Event would be gone; and perhaps the biggest announcement of all:

I'd say delay it but only about a month or less. I as a player and fan forget about it after a few weeks the and pick it up again in late October. I watch the wsop on espn but think that could be done way quicker. So show more episodes per week then give people time to schedule Vegas trip for final table. The build up and hype is really hype cause this past year I saw little promotion of them unless u picked up a cardplayer magazine. And those who are.reading that or on the website already know enough. Then it becomes boring...like watching too pregame info all week on superbowl I'm alreary bored by Wednesday.. get rid of 4 month layoff and make it less than 4 weeks after!

There is no question that the addition of the "November Nine" has added a new dimension to the WSOP Main Event by creating a separate class of top players which make it to the last nine. In the past third place was forgotten minutes after they stepped away from the table yet now, the top nine remain "the November Nine" for that year. In ten years the WSOP can (with serious sponsorship) run a tournament where only players that have made the November Nine can play.

Also, the November Nine levels the playing field by allowing the best poker to be played at the final table. The argument that it should be a test of endurance, stamina, etc only holds water when you are dealing with reasonable fields of players. The WSOP (and soon the WSOPE) have horribly large fields and if anything rest days should be introduced rather than tightening it up. Running older players into the ground should not be an acceptable tactic when the fields get big.

Completely agree with rainmaker. The Final Table should be played out in under a month (maybe 2 weeks ideally). The break creates hype, which is good for the players and the game, but beyond a month or so it becomes sort of silly. I think it made a bit more sense when online poker was alive and well, but even then it was too stretched out.

Sorry - don't like the November Nine and never did. Part of tournament poker was/should be stamina. Start the final table the day after it's reached and play until it's down to ONE! Don't care how long it takes...

Poker tries to position itself as a sport and does a stupid thing like delay the final table - in what sport does this happen - sport is about endurance and high drama right from start to end - Djokovic v Nadal match the other week if that had been stopped to play the deciding set months later would be never even considered. Poker world needs to stop being full of themselves and play it as it is like any other sporting event, start to finish.
