It's Thanksgiving. And while poker players tend not to pay attention to the calendar (except the one that announces promotions and tournaments in the poker room) I for one cannot help but pause and reflect...
I'm going to assume that you've learned to be tight. You've learned to throw away trash hands on Third Street. Perhaps you've practice with the Wilson software....
Let's recap our death spiral. We started with a good couple of hours of play, confounded by bad fortune and a drop of $200 from our original stack of $500....

You've been there, I know it. If you're a serious player who plays in serious games with strangers, on line or in card rooms, you've been there.
I like candlepin bowling. The bowling ball fits into the palm of my hand. The pins are long, tapered, and narrow. And I get three throws to knock down all the balls. What's not to like....
If the table is full of dim opponents, you take the initiative and light them up. Such was the case a few nights ago when I dropped by a $1-5 table at Foxwoods Resort Casino....
I just got back from a wonderful four days at Foxwoods Resort casino - which held FARGO, a convention of sorts of we poker playing fanatics who know each other primarily from the Internet.
I love old movies. Good thing too, because I don't have cable. And sometimes that's all that's on late at night when I can't sleep. There was one the other night. I don't remember the name.
I've played poker of every sort, including stud well into the night and early morning. I've observed friends and foe alike at the poker table at every hour of the day and night...
I was playing $5/10 Stud on line at Party Poker. I had (AA)J. The 3c to my immediate left brought it in. It was folded around to the player to my right. He had a J exposed as well.
I was playing $5/10 Stud at Party Poker. Most of the time, when I sit down in a $5/10 game, it's a pretty loose and passive experience...
I think more people lose more money on low pairs with medium or low kickers than any other starting hand in 7-Card Stud.
Players starting out in Stud are correctly advised to play straightforwardly - making money from the mistakes of their opponents.
When you're playing poker against those who tend to be too loose, it's generally correct to wait until you have a hand that is likely to be ahead in value before you bet aggressively.
Most of the time, when you're playing a tight/aggressive game, you're going to find yourself raising on Third Street and then continuing to bet on Fourth Street when you figure you still have the best hand.
In the last two columns on this subject we explored exactly what check-raising was and how to use it in a game. But what happens when you come to a game and there is a rule against check-raising?
Check-raising is a valuable tool for the Stud player for many reasons. Even so, it remains controversial in many circles among poker players. In part two of this series...
