APPT Tournament of Champions

Day 1 Completed

That's It from Sydney!

Vanessa Rousso - Champion of the TOC
Vanessa Rousso - Champion of the TOC
It's been a fantastic week of poker, and a successful three and half months following the Asia Pacific Poker Tour trail. From the first flop at the APPT Main Event in Macau to the last river here in Sydney, there was plenty of exciting poker action here at the Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia. Martin Rowe was newly crowned a millionaire last night, and Vanessa Rousso earned AU$45,000 today for the fledgling charity started by Rousso and her fiance, Chad Brown.

We'd like to extend our deepest thanks to the Asia Pacific Poker Tour and its primary sponsor PokerStars.net for putting together a fantastic tour and making sure that things ran as smoothly as could be at each stop. APPT President Jeffrey Haas and his hard-working staff have earned a well-deserved vacation.

Happy Holidays to all. See you next time for Season 3 of the APPT.

Martin Rowe Eliminated in 2nd Place (AU$5,000); Vanessa Rousso Wins Tournament of Champions (AU$45,000)

Martin Rowe - 2nd Place
Martin Rowe - 2nd Place
Martin Rowe wasn't left with many options. His chip stack had fallen to 15,000. When Vanessa Rousso open-shoved, he had a tough choice.

"Yeah, alright," he said after some thought. "I call." Rowe showed {7-Spades} {9-Hearts}, two live cards against Rousso's {K-Diamonds} {5-Spades}. Neither player improved on a board of {A-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {3-Spades} {Q-Clubs} {6-Clubs}. As a result, Rousso's king-high was the winning hand. She prevented Rowe from winning back-to-back tournaments by eliminating him in second place and winning the Tournament of Champions.

The real winners of this tournament, however, are the charities that each player was playing for. Rowe earned $5,000 for Save the Children, the leading independent organization creating real and lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world.

Rousso earned $45,000 for the No Limit No Profit Initiative, which is a charity established by Chad Brown and herself where poker players give back to the community. This money is going to be used to market the newly found charity as well as market the upcoming annual event where all funds raised will be donated to cancer research and providing Africa with medical supplies.

Rousso Takes Bigger Lead

Following a short break, Martin Rowe continued his aggressive play by raising to 9,000 total following Vanessa Rousso's call from the button. Rousso called the additional 6,000 and both players saw the flop of {A-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}.

Rowe checked over to Rousso who immediately asked for a count, after responding with, "I've got around 19,000", Rousso decided to check behind.

The turn fell the {J-Spades} and Rowe again checked over to Rousso. As Rousso eyed off Rowe behind her dark shades she proceeded to move all-in. Rowe debated a call for his tournament life for over 90 seconds before laying his hand down.

With that pot Rousso moved up to 81,000 as Rowe slumped down to 19,000 in chips.

Rousso Doubles Up

A really strange hand just took place, and it led to a double up for Vanessa Rousso. Martin Rowe limped in on the button, prompting Rousso to announce she was all in. Rowe quickly said, "Call," then seemed to suddenly blink and shake his head. WIth an exasperated sigh, he turned over his hand {10-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} and metnioned that he had some brain freeze. Based on his hand, he probably had meant to fold, but it was too late. He was attempting, for the second time, to knock Rousso out.

Rousso showed {K-Clubs} {J-Clubs}. She hit top pair and a flush draw on the {K-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {6-Clubs}, leaving Rowe drawing at three queens. The turn {6-Spades} and the river {10-Clubs} didn't hit him.

There was further confusion in the hand as the dealer counting down Rousso's stack. She was sure that the dealer counted down 37,600, but wound up with only 68,600 after the pot was pushed. Eventually it was sorted out with Rowe shipping a few extra chips to Rousso. She now has 75,200.

On The Rail

Only being one or two hands away from crowning a Champion a tidy rail of support has gathered.

Grant Levy has walked back into the Star Theatre Foyer to sweat the action along with Tony Hachem and a bunch of staff.

Will Martin Rowe capture the form that made him Australia's newest million-dollar man or will Vanessa "LadyMaverick" Rousso hold on to her current lead to add another title to her already impressive record.

Rousso Doubles To Chip Lead

Martin Rowe opened to 6,000 from the button and Vanessa Rousso instantly moved all-in for 32,300. Rowe called just as quickly and tabled {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts} to be in good shape against Rousso's {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts}.

The flop of {3-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{Q-Spades} wasn't as dramatical as the turn of the {4-Clubs} landing. Needing one of three remaining seven's in the deck to claim victory, Rowe would be disappointed when the {J-Clubs} landed on the river doubling Rousso up to over 64,000.

Rowe is now looking at a two-to-one deficit sitting with a touch over 35,000 in chips.
