Day 3 Completed: Pierre Neuville Leads Final 24

Day 3 of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Main Event has come to a close after the 72 players who started the day were reduced to just 24 after a shade over five 75-minute levels. Leading the final 24 into battle when play resumes at 1200 CET on Thursday is Team PokerStars Pro Pierre Neuville who bagged up 780,550 chips.

Neuville is one of the Team Pros from Belgium having formerly being a Friend of PokerStars, promoted this season to mark his ability to seemingly satellite into every EPT Main Event he wants to enter. Although now 69-years of age Neuville showed the so-called young guns how the old school used to do things, slow steady and with amazing efficiency.

He was catapulted to the top of the chip counts after winning a massive pot from defending champion Michael Tureniec, who had slow played pocket aces and allowed Neuville to pair both the king and queen in his hand. Tureniec was unable to let his pocket rockets go and Neuville saw his stack swell to epic proportions. Neuville even passed the 1,000,000 chip mark at one point but lost a little ground towards the end of play.

Hot on Neuville's heels are the likes of Alexander Manson (780,000), Aage Floenes Ravn (681,000) and Alejandro Sanchez Fernandez (620,500).

Neuville will be kept company by a fellow Team Pro in the shape of Martin Staszko (432,500) and Team Online's Mickey Petersen (451,500), the latter coming back from just 7,300 chips with blinds of 1,000/2,000! Quite an achievement.

The players will return to their seats at 1200 CET on Thursday and play will continue until only the final table of eight remain. Can Neuville hang onto his lead or will it be one of the new generation players who knocks him from his lofty perch? Join the Pokernews Live Reporting team tomorrow for all the action from the EPT Copenhagen Main Event.

Great Call By van Alphen

Niels van Alphen has just been put under intense pressure by Keld Volquardsen and has passed the test with flying colours.

Volquardsen raised to 17,000 and van Alphen defended his blind. The flop was {10-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {2-Clubs} and both players checked. On the turn the dealer gave them the {7-Spades} and van Alphen led for 15,000. Volquardsen very quickly raised to 40,000 and van Alphen called. On the river we saw the {3-Hearts} and van Alphen - who had around 140,000 behind - checked to Volquardsen who bet 65,000. Van Alphen took a few minutes to compose himself before making the call and Volquardsen immediately started to shake his head before turning over {A-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} for ace-high. Van Alphen, on the other hand, turned over {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} for a great call.

Staszko Riles Antar

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Martin Staszko
Martin Staszko

We joined the action on a board reading {Q-Spades}{7-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs} with Metin Antar having checked from the small blind to Team PokerStars Pro Martin Staszko in the big blind. There were around 175,000 chips in the pot and Staszko moved all-in.

As Staszko shoved Antar slammed his chips down in disgust. He sat rather animated before saying "You can't be bluffing me, I fold" turning over {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}. Staszko responded by flipping over {10-Clubs}{10-Spades} much to the annoyance of Antar, who judging by his demeanour is in need of the break more than anyone else in the room.

Malki Yaron Zeev Has Some Divine Help

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Malki Yaron Zeev could go all the way and win this tournament because he claims to be having some divine help. He and Alexander Manson were discussing a hand that had been completed.

"When I check the flop aren't you meant to bet the turn?" asked Zeev

"Yes but I was scared. You have the book," replied Manson referring to the Torah Zeev has been reading all day long.

"It is not the book you have to worry about, I have him," pointing towards the ceiling.
