Day 2 Completed

Linda Lieder Wins HPO St. Louis Regional Main Event ($48,440)!

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Linda Lieder
Linda Lieder

Linda Lieder took down the 2015 Hollywood Poker Open St. Louis Regional Main Event minutes before midnight on Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri. She topped a field of 173 players to earn the title, a $48,440 first-place prize, and a seat in the season-ending $2,500 Championship Event to be held at M Resort Casino and Spa in Las Vegas this June.

The Pontoon Beach, Illinois, resident won her seat to the event through a $45 satellite at Hollywood Casino in St. Louis, then took on all comers, including beating five-time World Series of Poker Circuit ring winner and WSOP bracelet winner Kyle Cartwright in heads-up play.

Cartwright began the day with a huge lead over the other 24 players who survived Day 1. He even managed to increase that lead, starting the final table of 10 as the only player over 1 million in chips, as veteran grinders like 2008 European Poker Tour Copenhagen champ Tim Vance and HPO Ambassador, 2003 WSOP Main Event champ, and HPO St. Louis Regional Main Event defending champion Chris Moneymaker hit the rail. In fact, Cartwright held on to the lead all the way down to six-handed play. That's when Lieder started winning a number of pots off him, eventually doubling through him with the {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} against the {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} after flopping a five.

Lieder took the lead for the first time after busting George Cepicky in fifth with ace-high, then took control when she sent Josh Lozada home in fourth, flopping a set of fives against his pocket queens.

Three handed, Lieder doubled Damian Radanov once, getting it in with a dominated ace, but when she did the same thing on a {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{9-Hearts} flop soon after, she managed to spike a pair on the river to bring what would be an insurmountable lead into heads-up play against Cartwright.

Although she doubled Cartwright once, Lieder used a series of unorthodox raise sizes to keep her opponent off balance and eventually got him to commit all of his chips having turned a straight against his top pair. With that, she became the latest HPO champion.

That's all from St. Louis as the HPO packs up and leaves for the next Hollywood Poker Open Regional stop at Charles Town Races In West Virginia. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will also be on hand for the Regional Main Event there, beginning on May 9, and you can find more coverage on these pages. We'll see you then!

Kyle Cartwright Eliminated in 2nd Place ($29,410)

Kyle Cartwright
Kyle Cartwright

Linda Lieder called a 50,000-chip open from Kyle Cartwright and the flop came {q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{2-Spades}. Lieder bet 75,000 and Cartwright called bringing them to the {8-Clubs} turn. Lieder then bet 100,000 and Cartwright called, bringing them to the {10-Clubs} river.

Lieder led out again, this time making it 200,000 and after a time in the tank, Cartwright called. Lieder showed {j-Diamonds}{9-Spades} for the straight and erased Cartwright's earlier double up.

A hand later, Cartwright could not shake Lieder with bets preflop, and on the flop. Finally, he led out for 80,000 into a {7-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} board and Lieder pushed in. Cartwright called with {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}, but top pair was no good, Lieder had turned a straight holding {8-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and it was all over once the {4-Spades} river was revealed.

Linda Lieder

Linda Lieder is pounding on Kyle Cartwright heads up, using a series of unorthodox and large raise sizes to keep him off balance and take pot after pot.

The one heads-up hand that did go to showdown, she got paid off with the same pair, having him outkicked.

Her lead has done nothing but increase since heads-up play began.

Damian Radanov made it 50,000 and Linda Lieder defended her big blind with a call. The flop fell {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Lieder led out for 150,000, Radanov shoved and she called with {A-Spades}{5-Clubs}, well behind Radanov's {A-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}.

The {2-Hearts} turn changed very little, but the {5-Diamonds} river gave Lieder a pair and busted Radanov third.

Linda Lieder made it 70,000, Damian Radanov shoved and she called it off with {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

Radanov held {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and was ahead until the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts} turn and tiver gave Lieder two pair.

However, she began celebrating with the rail a little too early, as the {3-Hearts} came down on the river making Radanov a flush.

Josh Lozada

Linda Lieder limped in and Josh Lozada checked his option. The flop came {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Lozado bet 30,000 and Lieder called.

But when then {6-Hearts} turn came down they managed to get it all in with Lozada on {q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} and Lieder having flopped a set with {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}.

Lieder held after the {6-Spades} river made her a full house and Lozada is out.
