A Bluff?

An interesting, ten-minute-long hand just took place involving Stanley Statkiewicz and Vanessa Selbst.

Statkiewicz raised to 32,000 from under the gun and the table folded back around to Selbst who called from the big blind. The flop came out all hearts -- {2-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. And both checked. The turn was the {4-Clubs}. Selbst bet 35,000, and Statkiewicz promptly pushed out a stack of 95,000. Selbst took a moment to decide, then called.

The river was the {K-Diamonds}. Selbst checked, and Statkiewicz bet 140,000. Selbst thought for a long time, long enough for Statkiewicz finally to call the clock. As the tourney director counted down the seconds, Selbst feigned folding to try to get a reaction, but none came. Finally, with seconds to go, Selbst folded.

"Yes!" exhaled Statkiewicz. "Dry ace, baby!" He folded without showing, though, and Selbst doubted he'd had the {A-Hearts} only.

Statkiewicz is back up around 320,000. Selbst is holding steady with 1.2 million.

Stan The Man

Vanessa Selbst called from the button before Stan Statkiewicz raised from the small blind. The big blind passed and Selbst called.

On a flop {5-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} Statkiewicz bet the pot, 110,000. It represented about half his stack. Selbst stood up looking like she was about to call or perhaps raise. She folded, though, and Statkiewicz showed {A-?} {A-?} {Q-?} x.

The Rich Get Richer

We have a three-way limped pot between Thom Schultz, Vanessa Selbst, and Stan Statkiewicz.

The flop is checked through, after which the board shows {4-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades}.

Selbst is in the small blind and leads out for a bet that only Statkiewicz calls.

The river comes {4-Clubs} and Selbst checks to Statkiewicz, who makes a bet. Selbst calls and flips over {5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{k-Clubs} for a straight and the pot.

Preflop Pressure

With blinds of 6,000/12,000, opening preflop raises can range between 24,000 and 42,000.

Those preflop raises have often been getting it done for Vanessa Selbst, as she continues to pressure her three opponents, all of whom are hovering around 300,000. (Selbst has about 1.45 million.) When she limped in from the button a while ago, Thom Schultz (in the big blind) said, "Scary!"

All likely have in mind the different payouts for fourth, third, and second. The next player to go out gets $72,004. See "Prizepool and Payouts" for the full payout schedule.

Eugene Todd Eliminated in Fifth ($59,053)

In the first hand after the break, Vanessa Selbst raised to 35,000 from under the gun, Thom Schultz called from the button, and Jamie Pickering called as well from the small blind. Eugene Todd then reraised with his last 175,000 from the big blind. Selbst called, and the others got out of the way.

Todd {6-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{Q-Spades}
Selbst {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{J-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The flop came {2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}, giving Selbst a set of jacks. The turn was the {4-Hearts} and the river the {2-Diamonds}, making it a boat. Todd is out, and Selbst back up over 1.4 million.
