Event #40: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em / Six Handed

Day 3 Completed

Day 3 Concludes; Jarvis Returns to Big Lead vs. Filtz Tomorrow

Level 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

When Event No. 40, the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em (Six-Handed) event, reached heads-up, there were still three hours of play remaining. Thus did it seem we'd learn tonight if either Justin Filtz or Matt Jarvis would be earning his first WSOP bracelet. But the pair's heads-up duel lasted the rest of the allotted time, and so to Day 4 we will go.

Just 20 from the starting field of 732 made it through to today's Day 3. Daniel Negreanu returned to a short stack today, and early on he saw fit to put those chips at risk with {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. Mauro Stivoli called Kid Poker with {A-Spades}{9-Spades}, a nine flopped, and two cards later Negreanu was the day's first elimination. Five more players would follow Negreanu to the rail during that first hour, including Jonathan Duhamel in 15th. It would more than an hour for the next elimination, coming in a hand in which Robert Merulla scored a double-knockout of Brendon Rubie (13th) and Russell Carson (14th) to push into the chip lead with two tables remaining.

As more players were eliminated, Wesley Pantling began to gather chips, as would Jarvis and Filtz, while the field was trimmed to nine by the dinner break. Shortly after the players returned, Mauro Stivoli was eliminated in eighth and Dan O'Brien in seventh, and the final six-handed table had been reached.

Both Matt Vengrin and Tore Lukashaugen began the final table on the short side, and they were soon eliminated in sixth and fifth, respectively. Robert Merulla had pushed into second place and looked as though he might be the primary challenger to Filtz' chip lead. But his stack began to slide, and soon Merulla found himself all in with {A-Hearts}{8-Spades} against Filtz' {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}, and five cards later he was out in fourth.

When three-handed, Filtz and Jarvis had both chips and aggression on their side, and after conceding a number of hands, Pantling committed his short stack with {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} versus Jarvis' {Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. When Jarvis turned a queen, Pantling was out in third.

From there ensued an epic heads-up battle between Filtz and Jarvis, the first half of which was marked by Filtz maintaining momentum and the lead, then Jarvis grabbed the advantage during the latter stages.

However, Filtz would double through and retake the lead in an all-in preflop hand in which Filtz' {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} survived versus Jarvis' {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Then he'd have Jarvis all in with his tourney life on the line with {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} against Filtz' {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. The flop brought Jarvis more ways to win, coming {8-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}. Then the {10-Diamonds} brought him a needed pair, and after the river {3-Clubs} Jarvis was back in front.

The clock wound down with the pair playing small pots, then on the very last hand of the night Filtz reraised all in before the flop, but Jarvis declined the offer to try to end it tonight.

So, on to Day 4! Jarvis will return to a healthy advantage with 8.645 million to Filtz' 2.345 million. Play will resume at 2:30 Vegas time. Check back here at PokerNews to find out who takes the bracelet for Event No. 40.

Day 4

Level 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

There are just a few minutes remaining, and barring another huge hand, it looks like we'll be looking at a Day 4.

Jarvis Wins Huge Race, Doubles

Matt Jarvis had the button, and raised to 125,000. Justin Filtz tanked before three-betting to 550,000, Jarvis moved all in for 4.07 million, and Filtz called.

Jarvis: {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Filtz: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Both rails were shouting, and the noise became deafening as the flop fell {8-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades}. It didn't pair Jarvis, but the Canadian added extra outs with a double gutterball. The turn did not give him a straight, but the {10-Diamonds} paired Jarvis, and his rail exploded.

"DEUUUUUUUUUCE!!!" they screamed "DEUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!"

The river was not a deuce, but the {3-Clubs} was the brick they were looking for. Jarvis went for a short victory lap as the floor counted the chips, and after a few minutes the stacks looked like this:

Filtz Retakes Control

Level 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

After getting those chips back, Matt Jarvis has returned them in short order to Justin Filtz over the course of a just a couple of hands.

In the first, the pair had already built a sizable pot by the turn when the board showed {Q-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. Jarvis checked, Filtz bet 275,000, and Jarvis made the call. The river brought the {3-Clubs} and Jarvis checked once more. Acting more quickly than usual, Filtz bet 850,000 and after some deliberation Jarvis called. Filtz tabled {5-Spades}{3-Hearts} for a full house, and Jarvis mucked.

On the next hand, Jarvis raised to 165,000 from the button and Filtz called. The pair checked the {Q-Spades}{A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop and {2-Spades} turn. The river was the {5-Spades}, and Filtz bet 250,000. Jarvis thought a second, then called. Filtz showed {K-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for king-high, and Jarvis sheepishly mucked his hand. "Wow, that's sick," he said. "I called you with jack-high."

A bit of frustration, perhaps, from Jarvis, who is back down to 3.2 million. Filtz, meanwhile, is pushing 7.8 million.

Jarvis Gets Some Back

Matt Jarvis had the button, and raised to 165,000. Justin Filtz called, and checked when the flop fell {q-Spades}{j-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Jarvis slid out 205,000, and Filtz called.

Both players checked the {2-Clubs} on the turn, and when the {8-Hearts} was dealt on the river, Filtz led for a tiny bet - 100,000. Jarvis tanked for a bit before double-fisting 725.000 into the pot, and Filtz snapped it off.

Jarvis opened up {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for a pair of queens, Filtz mucked, and the Canadian shipped the pot.

Filtz Doubles Through, Retakes Lead

Level 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

It started quietly, like most of the hands of this heads-up battle, with a raise from the button. This time it was Matt Jarvis making it 165,000 to go. Justin Filtz responded by reraising to 480,000, and Jarvis didn't waste much time before announcing he was all in. Filtz called right away. Cards on their backs...

Filtz {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Jarvis {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

Filtz was all in for approximately 3.4 million. The five community cards came {2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, and Filtz's hand had held. He retakes the chip lead with that one, now with 6.8 million while Jarvis slips under 3.2 million.

One Pair is Good For Monster Pot

Justin Filtz had the button and raised to 125,000. Matt Jarvis three-bet to 455,000, Filtz called, and the flop came down {4-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Jarvis led for 485,000, and Filtz called.

Both players checked the {7-Hearts} on the turn, and the river brought the {k-Clubs}. Jarvis slid out 860,000, and Filtz quickly called.

Jarvis tabled {q-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for a pair of sevens, and Filtz unhappily mucked his hand.
