Sowers, Grospellier, & Moorman Lead the Pack w/ 22 Players Headed to Day 3!

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand Grospellier

Twelve hours ago, 162 players returned for Day 2 of Event No. 46, the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed event in an attempt to crack the top 48 and earn themselves a payday. By the end of the night, what started as a 474-player field had been reduced to just 22 players. Leading the way is none other than Mike Sowers, who bagged up 1,468,000 in chips.

Close on his heels are a number of recognizable pros in Chris Moorman (1,458,000), Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (1,409,000), David Benefield (622,000), Lee Markholt (368,000), and Ben Lamb (501,000).

With a stacked field advancing to Day 3, it is easy to overlook those who fell in their wake. Ali Eslami, Huck Seed, Andy Frankenberger, Jonathan Duhamel, David “Bakes” Baker, Alan Sternberg, James Akenhead, Dwyte Pilgrim, McLean Karr, and David “Devilfish” Ulliott were all Day 2 eliminations; in fact, they were all among the 114 players who fell short of the money.

While many pros failed to gain momentum on Day 2, others managed to make their way past the money bubble. Some of the players who cashed were Tom Marchese (47th- $19,159), Davidi Kitai (45th- $19,159), Daniel Alaei (43rd- $19,159), Isaac Baron (39th- $21,787), Dmitry Gromov (34th- $24,773), Jason Koon (29th- $29,228), Phil “Unabomber” Laak (28th- $29,228), and Joe Cada (26th- $29,228).

Headed into Day 3, there are two major storylines to keep an eye on. First and foremost, Lamb is fresh off a victory in Event #42 $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship where he captured his first WSOP gold bracelet and the accompanying $814,436 first-place prize. Combine that with his second-place finish in Event #31 Pot-Limit Omaha, for which he earned $259,918, and he currently current sits atop the WSOP Player-of-the-Year Race. Not including this event, Lamb has 486.25 points, which is more than 60 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

Like Lamb, Grospellier is seeking his second bracelet of the summer after emerging victorious in Event #21 Seven Card Stud Championship to win the $331,639 prize. Grospellier currently sits in 18th on the POY Leaderboard with 299.25 points, a total he is guaranteed to add to no matter where he finishes in this event. Capturing two bracelets in the same year is rare, let alone in two Championship Events. Both Lamb and Grospellier have the opportunity to accomplish that here in Event #46. If either is able to do so, it’ll no doubt go a long way in helping them compete for the coveted POY title.

Play resumes at 2:30 P.M. PST as the remaining players battle their way to the final table and the $1.15 million first-place prize. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be in full force to bring you all of the action, chip counts, and eliminations from the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed Championship, so join us then!

Sowers Flops Flush, Busts Benzerfa

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Board: {2-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades}

Mike Sowers checked, [Removed:388] bet 42,000, and Sowers raised to 135,000. Benzerfa tanked momentarily before moving all in, and Sowers snapped it off, tabling {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for a flopped flush.

"F***!!!" Benzerfa blurted, opening up {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}.

The board could still pair, but it didn't when the {9-Spades} was dealt on the river. Benzerfa quickly exited the tournament area, while Sowers silently pulled in a massive amount of chips, putting his stack around 1.2 million.

Sowers Eliminates Pesek

After losing a big race to [Removed:388] and was left with a short stack, Michael Pesek moved all in from the cutoff for his last 95,000 and was called by Mike Sowers on the button. The blinds got out of the way and it was heads up.

Sowers: {A-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Pesek: {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Sowers was ahead, but not after the flop fell {9-Spades}{J-Spades}{4-Clubs}. Pesek had paired his jack to take the lead and left Pesek drawing to an ace or running cards. Unfortunately for Pesek, the situation would be reversed as the {A-Clubs} spiked on the turn. Suddenly it was Pesek who needed to catch to stay alive.

The dealer burned one last time before putting out the {K-Diamonds}. Pesek was eliminated in 24th place while Sowers chipped up to 830,000.

Door Closes on Collopy

Nick Grippo raised to 23,000 from the small blind, Jim Collopy three-bet from the big, Grippo four-bet shoved and Collopy called.

Grippo: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Collopy: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Grippo was crushed, and remained behind when the flop fell {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. He added four extra outs to a straight when the {q-Clubs} turned though, and miraculously, the {10-Hearts} slammed on the river to indeed give him Broadway.

Collopy was eliminated in 25th place, earning himself $29,228, while Grippo is now well above a million chips.

Klodnicki Wins Race, Doubles

Tyler Smith opened to 21,000 from the cutoff, Chris Klodnicki moved all in for 146,000 from the small blind, Smith made the call, and we were off to the races!

Smith: {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Klodnicki: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Smith jumped out to an early lead when the flop fell {j-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{9-Spades}, but Klodnicki was still alive with an open-ended straight draw. The {3-Clubs} on the turn was a blank, but the {k-Clubs} spiked on the river, giving Klodnicki the straight he needed.

Klodnicki doubled to more than 300,000 chips, while Smith is left with less than 100,000.

"We need hearts"

After a series of betting between William Thorson and Michael Gagliano, Gagliano was all in and behind

Gagliano: {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Thorson: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Before the dealer could put out five cards Gagliano stated "we need hearts". Instead of hearts the dealer gave Gagliano a queen on a {10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop. The {6-Clubs} gave Thorson a flush draw. The {q-Clubs} river gave Gagliano three of a kind queens, but it also gave Thorson the winning hand with a flush.

Cada Cut Short by ElkY

Joe Cada - Eliminated
Joe Cada - Eliminated

After a series of raises, 2009 WSOP Main Event Champion Joe Cada was all in with {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} against the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} of Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier.

Nines were faithful to Cada at the Main Event final table, but he received no help from the {7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{3-Spades} board tonight, and was eliminated.

Meanwhile, Grospellier has vaulted into the chip lead with more than 1.4 million in his stack.
