Shawn Daniels Takes the Day 1a Chip Lead at the Ante Up Poker Tour Atlantis Main Event

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Shawn Daniels
Shawn Daniels

The opening flight of the Ante Up Poker Tour Atlantis $1,100 Main Event is a wrap. A total of 77 entries made their way to the Atlantis Casino for Day 1a and played down until the field was narrowed to 10 players. Those 10 players are in the money and will advance to Day 2 on Sunday.

At the end of the day, it was Shawn Daniels bagging the chip lead. Daniels added a considerable chunk to his stack on the final hand of the night, eliminating Ryan Awwad on the money bubble in a kings-versus-queens showdown.

Kevin O’Donnell, already the winner of two events in the 2019 Ante Up Atlantis series, started building a big stack in the beginning levels of the day before hitting a wall late in the night. O’Donnell was eliminated in 12th place, going out on an ace-king versus pocket tens hand against Daniels.

Other players near the top of the chip leaderboard include Valerie Hanley (353,000) and Madison Austria (249,000) .

Lots of formidable competition showed up for Day 1a. Some of the notable players that didn’t make it through to Day 2 included Ian Steinman, Eric Baldwin, Dan O’Brien, Jesse Rockowitz andJosh Prager, who just weeks ago took down the Ante Up World Championship Main Event at Thunder Valley and was featured on PokerNews' LFG Podcast.

Still in the hunt after making it through Day 1a are accomplished players like Scott Davies (107,500) and Joe Elpayaa.

The 10 players that did advance will take Saturday off and the Day 1b field will play until the money. Then, the Day 1a and Day 1b field will combine on Sunday for Day 2 and play down to a winner in this $200,000 guaranteed tournament.

The eliminations came at a rapid pace after the dinner break, going from four tables down to the final two tables in just three levels. The pace of play slowed down with 18 players left. The flight ended with 22:17 remaining in Level 16.

Day 1b will commence Saturday at 11 a.m., starting at 100/100 blinds. Players will take 15-minute breaks after every three 40-minute levels, with a dinner break scheduled after Level 9. Late registration will be available through the end of the dinner break.

The Dance Part Two

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Vincent Rinaldo
Vincent Rinaldo

Vincent Rinaldo once again announced that it was time for "the dance", which is Rinaldo's way of saying he's going all in. Rinaldo then pushed his 34,000 stack in the middle from the hijack.

Jarod Minghini called from the button.

Vincent Rinaldo: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Jarod Minhini: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

The coin flip went Rinaldo's way, with the runout falling {7-Hearts}{q-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades} to give the Atlantis Poker Room regular a full house.

Huge Pot for Hanley

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Valerie Hanley
Valerie Hanley

Valerie Hanley bet 2,000 from middle position on a {5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop, and Albert Sanchez reraised all in from the hijack. Hanley called.

Albert Sanchez: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Valerie Hanley: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}

Hanley had Sanchez dominated when the cards turned over, and nothing changed on the turn or river, sending Sanchez to the rail.

Joseph Crowley, on the cutoff, and Ryan Awwad, in the small blind, got all in against each other preflop, with Awwad's tournament life at risk.

Ryan Awwad: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Joseph Crowley: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

Board: {9-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Awwad's superior pocket pair held up through the river, and Crowley is now hovering on around 12 big blinds after the loss.

Hanley Sends Prager to the Exit

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Dick Hanley
Dick Hanley

Josh Prager won the Ante Up World Championship Main Event just three weeks ago at the AUPT's Thunder Valley stop. His first entry into the Ante Up Atlantis Main Event, however, is already over.

Prager came up on the wrong end of consecutive hands, the first coming against Ryan Awwad. Awwad and Prager got to the river of a {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} board, both players checked, and Awwad took down a modest-sized pot with {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}.

On the following hand, the pot was much bigger, with Prager going all in preflop from the small blind for 18,000. Dick Hanley called from the big blind.

Josh Prager: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Dick Hanley: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

The call from Hanley was bad news for Prager, with Hanley well ahead preflop. The runout came {9-Spades}{5-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, and Prager, a late registrant, is out quickly in Day 1a.

Elpayaa Busts Nelson

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Joe Elpayaa
Joe Elpayaa

With {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts} on the board, Joe Elpayaa put 50,000 in the pot from the big blind. Punkie Nelson, in the small blind, would be at risk for her tournament life with the call. Nelson indeed did make the call.

Joe Elpayaa: {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Punkie Nelson: {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Elpayaa was ahead with two pair, but Nelson still had life with a flush draw and bottom pair combo. The river {10-Diamonds} sealed the win for Elpayaa, however, who moved up to over 100,000 chips.

Crowley Leaves Steinman With One Last Chip

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Joseph Crowley
Joseph Crowley

With three players in the hand on a {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop, the action checked to Joe Crowley on the button, who bet 3,500. Ian Steinman called under the gun, and the third player called from middle position.

All three players checked through the {a-Hearts} turn. The {q-Clubs} came on the river, and Steinman bet 18,000, leaving just 100 for himself behind. The middle position player folded, and Crowley made the call.

Crowley turned over {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}, taking in a massive pot and leaving Steinman severely short stacked.

O'Donnell Pays Tribute to Longtime Friend Cary Marshall

Level 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Cary Marshall
Cary Marshall

Kevin O'Donnell is in the Main Event field on Day 1a, and he's already won two events at the Ante Up Poker Tour Atlantis Series.

One of those wins came in the 1st Annual Cary Marshall Memorial Western Seniors Poker Series, a $200 No-limit Event. Marshall passed away earlier this month, just weeks after finishing third in the Super Seniors event at the World Series of Poker for a career-best $162,536.

The poker community mourned the loss of Marshall, who was a three-time WSOP Circuit ring winner with nearly a million dollars in career tournament earnings. O'Donnell knew Marshall well, as the two teamed up to play the WSOP Tag Team No-Limit Hold'em event on four occasions.

O'Donnell paid tribute to his friend by taking down the tournament, newly renamed in tribute of Marshall, for a $4,900 payday.
