Ian Wassell Leads the Day 1b Pack; Dan "jungleman12" Cates Sits in Second

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Ian Wassell
Ian Wassell

Day 1b of the 2015 Aussie Millions Poker Championship AU$10,600 Main Event attracted 173 players – 20 more than the year before – but after seven 90-minute levels, approximately 91 remained with Ian Wassell and his stack of 229,500 leading the way.

Others who bagged up big stacks were online legend Dan "jungleman12" Cates, Corey Kempson, Mustapha Kanit, and Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang.

Speaking of Cates, he was involved in perhaps the biggest pot of the day, which happened in Level 6 (250/500/75) against Kanit. There was around 30,000 in the pot when action exploded on a {7-Spades}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds} flop and a series of raises resulted in Cates getting his remaining stack of 75,275 all in and at risk against Kanit.

Kanit tabled the {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}, but it was no good as Cates had flopped a set with the {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}. It was a particularly interesting spot for both players. Kanit won two massive pots earlier in the day courtesy of aces, while Cates busted the $100,000 Challenge twice on Sunday holding kings only to be shown aces on both occasions.

With approximately 180,000 on the line the dealer slowly burned and put out the {J-Spades} turn. It was a safe card for Cates, but there was still one more card to come. The dealer burned a third and final time and revealed the {5-Hearts}. Safe again.

"Finally won one of those," Cates said as smile beamed across his face. Kanit, who at one point was the chip leader with nearly 200,000 (nearly 40,000 more than the Day 1a chip leader), silently cut out chips from his stack and sent them across the table. Kanit and Cates continued to clash after that, but even so both finished with top-five stacks.

Others who managed to punch their ticket to Day 2 were Australian Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson (97,600); European Poker Tour regular Andrew Chen (88,200); Jesse "OnTheMac" McKenzie (87,000); long-time Aussie pro Grant Levy (78,700); a legendary sportscaster's son, Kane Kalas (74,000); the UK's Simon Deadman (28,700); and Macau "Big Game" pioneer Winfred Yu (18,000).

Of course not everyone was so fortunate. Among those to hit the rail on Day 1b were David Steicke, Aaron Lim, Celina Lin, Sam Cohen, Chad Awerbuch, Tom Grigg, Jake Abdalla, Fabian Quoss, and Shiva Dudani, who actually fell after running aces full into a Royal Flush.

Day 1c, which is the third and final starting flight, will begin at 12:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday. It will be the largest flight thus far, and it'll be filled with plenty of big names including Patrik Antonius, Sorel Mizzi, and Phil Ivey, just to name a few. Players will once again play seven 90-minute levels, and of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be there every step of the way to bring your all the action and eliminations straight from the floor of the Crown Poker Room.

While you wait, check out our video on Australia Day:

Fetzer Goes Runner-Runner to Cripple Harada

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Konstantin Fetzer
Konstantin Fetzer

With around 15,000 in the pot and a flop of {q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, Konstantin Fetzer bet 5,500 from the small blind and Hiroaki Harada, who has made the final table of a couple Aussie Millions preliminary events last week, raised to 15,000 from the hijack. Fetzer popped it back to 25,000, Harada shoved all in, and Fetzer, who would later clarify that he had actually miscalculated his opponent's stack, opted to call off for right around 50,000.

Fetzer: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Harada: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Fetzer had flopped top pair, but it was way behind the top set of Harada. Fetzer needed to catch running straight cards, and much to the dismay of Harada, the {8-Hearts} turn made it a possibility. Unbelievably, the {9-Clubs} spiked on the river to give Fetzer the improbably straight, and to crush Harada's spirits.

As Harada paced the tournament floor bemoaning his bad luck, the dealer verified the stacks and discovered Fetzer was the one at risk and Harada actually had 6,000 remaining. It was little consolation as Harada was eliminated a few hands later.

Kanit vs. Cates for the Chip Lead

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Dan Cates
Dan Cates

A massive pot, one that shifted the chip lead, just went down over at Table 31 between Dan "jungleman12" Cates and Mustapha Kanit.

We're not sure how the action played out, but we do know there was around 30,000 in the pot when action exploded on a {7-Spades}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds} flop. A series of raises resulted in Cates getting his remaining stack of 75,275 all in and at risk against Kanit.

Kanit: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Cates: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

It was an interesting spot for both players. Kanit won two massive pots earlier in the day courtesy of aces, while Cates busted the $100,000 twice yesterday holding kings only to be shown aces on both occasions. Here, at least for the moment, Cates had gotten lucky.

With approximately 180,000 on the line the dealer slowly burned and put out the {J-Spades} turn. It was a safe card for Cates, but there was still one more card to come. The dealer burned a third and final time and put out the {5-Hearts}. Safe again.

"Finally won one of those," Cates said as smile beamed across his face. Kanit, who at one point was the chip leader with nearly 200,000 (nearly 40,000 more than the Day 1a chip leader), silently cut out chips from his stack and sent them across the table. With that, Cates has seized the chip lead.

Dudani Ousted by Royal Flush

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Shiva Dudani
Shiva Dudani

The details of the hand escaped us, but we do know American pro Shiva Dudani was just eliminated by Linh Tran.

A raising war broke out between the two on the river with a board reading {10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{10-Spades}. The chips got in, and Tran had Dudani covered by less than 2,000.

Dudani: {a-}{a-}
Tran: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Dudani had flopped top set and made a full house, but Tran held the grandaddy of all hands — a Royal Flush!

Dudani seemed a bit shellshocked before taking his leave from the tournament while the rest of the players at the table looked on in awe.

Cohen is Off to the Super Bowl

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Sam Cohen
Sam Cohen

Two years ago Sam Cohen made a deep run in the Aussie Millions Main Event, ultimately finishing in eighth place for AU$120,000 (her largest cash to date). Cohen was in action today hoping for a similar experience, but her run was cut short here in the closing minutes of Level 4.

We missed the action as it unfolded, but we do know Cohen got her last 9,000 all in on a {j-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{10-Spades} flop holding the {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. Unfortunately for her, the red-hot Mustapha Kanit had flopped a set with the {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Neither the {8-Spades} turn nor {3-Diamonds} river helped Cohen, and she collected her banana from the table and exited the tournament floor.

While Cohen's Aussie Millions Main Event is done, she does have a backup plan — she's already got tickets to the Super Bowl in Phoenix. However, the diehard Miami Dolphins fans made it clear she is neither a fan of the Seattle Seahawks nor New England Patriots.

Kanit Believe the Call

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Mustapha Kunit
Mustapha Kunit

Mustapha Kanit has joined the Main Event shenanigans and found himself an incredibly difficult spot but found a great call to double to 85,000.

Around 37,000 had made it into the middle by the time the river had been dealt to leave a {5-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} board. Kanit was heads up and led for 13,500 out of a 23,675 stack. His opponent shoved on him and that sent the Italian pro into an epic tank.

After five minutes, his opponent said, "I wouldn't want to be you!"

Kanit smiled and thought for two more minutes, checking his holding on two occasions before he flicked in the call. Then he heard one of the most beautiful lines a player can hear in poker, "Good call."

Kanit opened {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} beating out his opponent's {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

Misclick Benefits Huang

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Bryan Huang
Bryan Huang

"I did that the other day," a player at Table 28 said as the dealer was busy sorting chips.

We missed the specifics, but from what we could piece together the player was referencing the prior hand between Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang and his opponent. Apparently preflop action saw Huang's opponent misclick and accidentally toss in yellow T5,000 chips as opposed to green T1,000 chips. Whatever the case, it resulted in Huang getting his stack of 22,000 or so all in preflop.

Huang: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Opponent: {10-}{9-}

Huang got it in good courtesy of the mistake, but he was still vulnerable. The {5-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop missed both players, but the {K-Hearts} turn hit Huang. His paired king secured him the double, and he was paid after the {9-Diamonds} was put out on the river for good measure.

Julius Colman Gives the "Shuffle Up and Deal"

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Julius Colman
Julius Colman

Yesterday 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Joe Hachem kicked off Day 1a with the traditional "shuffle up and deal," and today Julius Colman got the honors.

Colman, who played yesterday and advanced to Day 2, is a well-respected lawyer and business man, but also an accomplished poker player with nearly AU$1,000,000 in winnings. On top of it all, he is a noted philanthropist.

After making the final table of the 2007 Aussie Millions — where he ultimately finished in fourth place for AU$500,000 — he donated the entire prize to a school for significantly underprivileged children with a high migrant and refugee population.

His work with the disadvantaged children and communities was recently recognized in a unique way when the Government of Australia when he made the Australia Day Honors list. He was awarded an Order of Australia, called an A.M., and subsequently Crown Melbourne was excited to have him kick off the Day 1b festivities.

PokerNews joins the Crown in recognizing Colman for his accomplishments both on and off the felt. We'll see him again on Day 2, but for now cards are in the air here on the second starting flight of the 2015 Aussie Millions Poker Championship.

Exhibition Hall

Wind back the clock and reset the levels for Day 1b of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event. Yesterday attracted 183 players and at least that many are expected in the Crown Poker Room today.

Ami Barer played on Day 1a and is making a good fist at defending his title as he soared through with 142,900. He looked calm, collected and had a big smile across his face all day. The same could be said for Jan Suchanek and why not? He claimed the overall lead with 163,400.

The same couldn’t be said for those who busted, including: Maria Ho, Matt Ashton, [Removed:17], Chris Moorman and former champs Oliver Speidel and Lee Nelson. In total, 97 players made it through to Wednesday's Day 2.

Once again, the plan for the day is to play seven 75-minute levels with a 15-minute break after each. There will also be a 75-minute dinner break at the end of Level 4.

Day 2 of the $100k Challenge will be playing out from 2:15PM local time across the tournament floor and live updates can be found by clicking here. We’re expecting some of the players who bust throughout the day to jump into the Main Event, we’ll keep you posted on any movements.
