Day 1a of the 2020 Borgata Winter Poker Open Event #13: $400 Almighty Stack NLH has come to a close after 17 levels of play. Of the 718 entrants on Day 1a, only 174 managed to get chips in a bag, locking up a seat for Day 2 Friday at 12 noon.

Olamide Otti bagged the lead by a good stretch, putting more than $1.5 million in the bank. He came from behind late in the flight, overtaking several other players already stacking close to one million. Only a handful crossed that milestone.

Otti is followed by Mingda Bi (1,134,000), Tanner Thrush (1,093,000), Kevin Ozcelik (1,043,000), and Michael Procopio (1,000,000). Honorable mentions go to Anthony Conti (996,000) Hot Tran (994,000), and Maurice Hawkins (992,000) who all bagged up just shy of a million.

Other notable stacks in the bag are two-time Borgata titleist Gene Castro (912,000), BorgataPoker.com Sponsored Pro Dan Buzgon (838,000), and WSOP bracelet holder Erik Cajelais (429,000).

Day 1b continues in the back of the Event Center with PokerNews continuing to provide live updates through its conclusion.

The final two Almighty starting flights will take off Thursday, January 23, at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. local time. A complete list of remaining players with their seat assignments and chip counts will be posted before the start of Day 2.

Rutherford Picks Off Jackson's Bluff

Level 16 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Timothy Rutherford & David Jackson
Timothy Rutherford & David Jackson

It was a battle of the blinds between Timothy Rutherford (small) and David Jackson (big) and on the river, the board read {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. Rutherford checked it over to Jackson, who plopped out a bet that covered Rutherford's remaining stack.

After a few moments, Rutherford put the last of his chips in the pot. Jackson tabled {10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for nothing but ten-high. Rutherford had {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of eights to take the pot.

Varnell Scoops Huge Pot

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Craig Varnell
Craig Varnell

There was some commotion on the table of Craig Varnell and Artur Dukaj just before the break and a not so sober player ended up getting a one-round penalty. Varnell was kind enough to relay what had happened during the hand:

Another player raised to 6,000 and was called by the penalized player and Dukaj and Varnell in the blinds.

The flop came {8-}{8-}{7-}, both Dukaj and Varnell checked. The initial raiser made it 10,000, the other player called, Dukaj folded, and Varnell called.

The turn brought the {6-Clubs} for the second club to come on the board. Varnell checked again, the initial raiser shoved for around 100,000, the other player shoved too for more and Varnell called for around 200,000.

Initial Raiser: {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Craig Varnell: {8-}{6-}
Other Player: {7-}{7-}

The initial raiser had the flush draw while the other player had flopped a full house, sevens over eights. But Varnell had turned the better full house with eights over sixes.

The river completed the board with a {9-} to not change things as Varnell earned a full double through the not so sober player and eliminated the initial raiser.

It seemed to kick off after that as the other player was sent away to cool down.

Three in a Row for Bielan

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Judith Bielan
Judith Bielan

In the first hand, the board read {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} with just over 30,000 in the middle already. Timothy Rutherford bet 14,500 from under the gun and was called by the player in the early position. Judith Bielan decided to shove for 55,900 from the middle position. Rutherford took some time to consider his options and then decided to shove too for almost 95,000. The third player took a few seconds but opted to get out of their way. Bielan tabled {k-Hearts}{q-Spades} for the nut straight while Rutherford had the {8-Diamonds} for the lower straight. The river completed the board with the {4-Hearts} as a formality as Bielan got paid.

The hand after, she raised to 3,200 from the middle position and was called by Michael Haberman in the late position, Daniel Dizenzo in the hijack, and the player in the small blind. The flop came {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}{q-Hearts} and Bielan and Haberman were the only ones to make the call when the small blind bet 7,200. The turn was the {4-Clubs} and now only Bielan called the 22,000 continuation-bet of her opponent. The river completed the board with the {q-Clubs} and both players checked. Bielan scooped the pot wiith {a-Spades}{4-Spades} for two pair.

Then in the last hand, the player in the under-the-gun position raised to 2,800 and was called by Bielan, the button, and the big blind. the flop came {6-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, the big blind check-folded to the 5,000 continuation-bet of the under-the-gun player which Bielan did call. The button also folded. The turn brought them the {3-Spades} for the intial raiser to check-fold to the 8,000 of Bielan who showed the {a-Hearts} after.

Burrell Triples Up; Taylor Busts

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Keith Burrell
Keith Burrell

The flop read {9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{j-Clubs} when a three-way all-in situation occurred on the table of David Finley (button), Keith Burrell (small blind), and Everton Taylor (big blind).

Burrell was at the biggest risk with the shortest stack of 70,100 while Taylor had around 91,000 left. Finley had both of them easily covered and the cards went on their backs.

Keith Burrell: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Everton Taylor: {k-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
David Finley: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}

Burrell had flopped a set, Taylor the flush draw while Finley had the pair of jacks.

The turn brought them the {j-Diamonds} for Finley to improve to trips but it gave Burrell a full house.

The river completed the board with the {7-Diamonds} for Taylor to be sent away from the tournament area, Burrell to triple up and for Finley to claim the rest of Taylor's stack.

One Start Stack Divvied Up Between Schiff and Babos

Level 6 : 400/800, 800 ante
Ronan Babos
Ronan Babos

In the first hand, the flop read {7-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts} with just over 11,000 in the middle already. The player in the hijack checked and Emile Schiff bet 3,000 from the button which was called. The turn was the {q-Diamonds} and Schiff's continuation-bet of 9,000 was check-called again. The river completed the board with the {5-Spades} and Schiff's opponent checked for the last time. Schiff fired a bet of 20,500 into the pot and that was enough to get the fold.

The hand after, the same player raised to 2,000 from under the gun and was called by the player in the hijack, Schiff in the cutoff, and Ronan Babos on the button. The flop came {9-Spades}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, it was checked to Schiff who bet 3,500. Babos called but the under-the-gun player raised to 10,000. The hijack and Schiff folded but Babos called.

The turn brought them the {10-Diamonds}, the initial raiser fired a bet of 15,000 over the line, Babos responded with a raise which was instantly met by a shove of his opponent. Babos quickly called with {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for the turned straight. The other player held {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for the set of sixes and needed the board to pair up to stay in the tournament. But the river completed the board with the {q-Hearts} for this player's first bullet to fail to hit any targets.
