The Race to the Final Table

Samuel Rodriguez

Welcome back to the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour, brought to you from the Casino Barcelona.

We raced to 24 players yesterday, and today's aim is to make our final table of eight. It'll take longer than yesterday, most probably, as there is so much more at stake.

Runaway chip leader is Spanish player Samuel Rodriguez on a massive 5,330,000, which is more than two million head of second placed Jonathan Karamalikis, who is many people's favourite for the title.

Team PokerStars SportsStar Fatima Moreira de Melo is still representing her sponsors well, and lest us not forget Roberto Romanello who is the only remaining EPT champion.

Play, as ever, is due to get under way at 12:00 PM CET. Join us back here then.

Sahamies Rockets Rufar to the Rail

"All in and a call," we heard a dealer yell as soon as we entered the tournament floor. We rushed over just in time to see Luis Rufas all in preflop from the button with {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. His opponent, Ilari Sahamies, had {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} laid out in front of him in middle position.

We're not sure of the preflop betting action, but we do know that Rufas was out of his seat in preparation for a hasty exit on the {2-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop. The {7-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead, and after the meaningless river card was put out, Rufas made his way to the payout desk.

Anaras Doubles Up Through Rodriguez

Anaras Alekberovas
Anaras Alekberovas

The chip leader coming into Day 5 of the EPT Barcelona Main Event Samuel Rodriguez has just lost a part of his stack to the Lithuanian player Anaras Alekberovas.

Anaras opened the hand with a raise to 45,000 in the hijack seat and Mikalai Pobal from Belarus raised to 115,000 in the cutoff. Rodriguez made the call and the Lithuanian shoved all in. Pobal got out of the way and Rodriguez called again.

Showdown
Alekberovas: {10-Hearts} {10-Spades}
Rodriguez: {9-Clubs} {9-Spades}

Alekberovas took an early lead and maintained it until the end of the hand as the board went {K-Hearts} {7-Spades} {8-Hearts} {5-Spades} {5-Hearts} giving the Lithuanian a double up.

Rodriguez Gives Up More to Alekberovas

Samuel Rodriguez has found an early day 5 nemesis in Anaras Alekberovas, and has seen his lead cut even further.

Alekberovas opened to 40,000 from early position and called when Rodriguez three-bet to 95,000 from the cut-off. Both players checked the flop and this invited Alekberovas to lead for 85,000 and 225,000 on the turn and river.

The final board read {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades}{4-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and Rodriguez called both bets. Alekberovas quickly opened his {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for a flopped full house and scooped as Rodriguez mucked.

Hernandez Ousts Roy

Action folded around to Elias Gutierrez Hernandez in the hijack and he raised to 40,000. Alain Roy then moved all in for approximately 400,000 from the button, the blinds got out of the way, and Hernandez made the call.

Showdown
Hernandez: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Roy: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The {9-Spades}{J-Hearts}{A-Spades} flop wasn't much help to Roy, but the {8-Spades} turn did give him an open-ended straight draw. Unfortunately for him, the {K-Hearts} river wouldn't complete it and his Main Event came to an end here on Day 5.

"One More Bullet"

Ilari Sahamies opened for 40,000 under the gun and picked up two callers-- Mikolaj Zawadzki in the hijack and Mauro Canavese in the big blind. Two checks on the {J-Hearts}{7-Spades}{Q-Spades} flop put action on Zawadzki, and he fired out 75,000. Canavese then woke up with a check-raise to 200,000, Sahamies folded, and Zawadzki made the call.

When the dealer burned and turned the {3-Diamonds}, Canavese bet another 200,000 and Zawadzki quickly called. Both players then checked the {Q-Diamonds} and river and neither was quick to show their cards. Canavese finally tabled {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a failed bluff, while Zawadzki showed {A-Spades}{10-Spades} for an ace high and the win.

"One more bullet," Sahamies advised Canavese after the hand.
