Alexander Ivarsson Bags Impressive Lead After Day 1 of the EPT13 Malta High Roller

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Alexander Ivarsson
Alexander Ivarsson

The first day of the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT13 Malta €10,300 High Roller attracted a field of 137 entries, of which 109 were unique entries and 28 players opted to fire a second bullet throughout the ten levels of one hour each. Only 73 players bagged up chips for Day 2 and Alexander Ivarsson secured a decent lead over the rest of the field with 379,100. The Swede was always among the big stacks at the EPT12 Malta Main Event back in October 2015 and ultimately had to settle for 9th place and a payday of €49,560 one year ago.

Second in chips is Armando Collado from Nicaragua with 258,300, while Diego Zeiter bagged up 251,700. Other big stacks and notables include [Removed:172] (220,000), Martin Finger (216,000), Farid Jattin (214,700), Stephen Chidwick (207,300), Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen (189,500), Cate Hall (166,900) and Georgios Zisimopoulos (161,800).

Among those to enter twice and run out of chip entirely were Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Dietrich Fast, Jason Wheeler, Benny Spindler, €10K,300 Single-Day High Roller champion Jakub Michalak, and Andrey Andreev. The latter in fact had been sent to the rail not once but twice in the first two and a half hours. Andreev's first bullet saw him flop top two pair only to run into the bottom set of Ivarsson. The Swede then consistently built his stack and eliminated several shorter stacks on his way to an impressive overnight lead.

Chidwick ran on his first bullet with kings into aces, bought back in and doubled before busting Spindler with ace-eight suited versus ace-queen. Zisimopoulos cooled down the hot early run of Charlie Carrel by winning a flip with ace-king against pocket queens, an ace hit on the river. Adrian Mateos was among the big stacks for most of the day, but a big move against Martin Finger with king-deuce suited in the last level of the night was not rewarded. The Spaniard eventually bagged up a mere 23,300, other short stacks for Day 2 include Nick Petrangelo (15,000), Frederik Jensen (19,600) and Davidi Kitai (35,000).

Registration remains open until 15 minutes prior to the restart with blinds of 1,000-2,000 and a running ante of 300, all new entries will thus receive 25 big blinds for level 11. The seat draw for Day 2 and the prize pool information will be released once the cards are back underway. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to provide all the action until a winner is crowned on Saturday, so make sure to tune back in regularly.

Chidwick Flushes Spindler

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Benny Spindler
Benny Spindler

Adrian Mateos has dropped even more chips while Stephen Chidwick just knocked out Benny Spindler to take over the role of biggest stack on their respective table.

Spindler raised to 4,200 from the button and Chidwick simply slid forward a tower of T-5,000 chips to Spindler two options - fold or call for the tournament life. Spindler opted for the latter to put himself at risk for approximately 46,000.

Benny Spindler: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
Stephen Chidwick: {A-Spades}{8-Spades}

The flop of {7-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} gave Chidwick a flushdraw, and while the {K-Diamonds} on the turn was a blank, the {3-Spades} on the river wasn't. Chidwick completed his flush and sent Spindler to the rail.

Martin Finger

A big pot was brewing with Adrian Mateos and Martin Finger involved. According to Finger, it was Mateos who raised to 3,500 and Finger three-bet to 10,500, Mateos four-bet to 23,000 and Finger called. On the {9-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop, Mateos bet 16,000 and Finger called before the {A-Spades} hit on the turn. Mateos shoved and Finger called for his last 56,900.

Martin Finger: {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Adrian Mateos: {K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

The {J-Diamonds} on the river was a blank and Finger doubled.

Chidwick Runs with Kings into Aces

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Roman Korenev raised to 2,300 from early position and Stephen Chidwick three-bet to 8,000 out of the small blind, which Korenev called. On the {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop, Chidwick bet 6,000 and Korenev moved all in. Chidwick called all in for around 40,000 and was at the wrong end of a cooler.

Stephen Chidwick: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Roman Korenev: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

The {8-Diamonds} turn and {7-Spades} river changed nothing anymore and Chidwick left the tournament area, he may very well be back soon for the second bullet though.

Mateos Surges to the Top With Set Over Set

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Adrian Mateos was just now on the right side of a brutal setup. On a board of {4-Hearts}{A-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} Ukranian Oleksii Khoroshenin sent his remaining 50,000 chips over the betting line, and the 2015 EPT Grand Final-winner didn't waste any time before putting his chips at risk.

Oleksii Khoroshenin: {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}
Adrian Mateos: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}

Mateos' top-set was good for the massive pot, and the Spaniard now sits on a 180,000 stack. On the other hand, Oleksii Khoroshenin is left with nothing more than a single big blind.

Troyanovskiy Busts to Hall

Level 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Cate Hall Thriving
Cate Hall Thriving

Caitlin Hall raised to 1,700 and a trio called in Stefan Jedlicka, Vladimir Troyanovskiy and Gheorghe Gradinaru. On the {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop, Hall continued for 4,300 after it was checked to her and just Troyanovskiy called before the {2-Clubs} turn went check, check. On the {4-Hearts} river, Hall bet 20,000 and Troyanovskiy eventually called all in for slightly less with the {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}.

Hall had that beat with {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and Troyanovskiy was gone for good on the second bullet. Allan Sannier followed suit shortly after on a different table and is the third player that won't be allowed to re-enter anymore.

Kitai Busts Second Tournament of the Day

Level 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Davidi Kitai
Davidi Kitai

It has't been the easiest of days for Davidi Kitai. He busted the Main Event in 22nd when his {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} couldn't best the {A-Spades}{10-Clubs} of Louis Cartarius, and just now he busted a bullet in the €10,300 High Roller to Govert Metaal.

It was, however, Gleb Tremzin that got most Kitai's stack. On a board of {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{7-Spades}{K-Spades}{Q-Spades} Tremzin put Kitai to the test by announcing all in, and though the Belgian player wasn't thrilled with the situation, he ultimately made the call for 27,100.

Tremzin's {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} had turned into the nutflush on the river, and scooped the massive pot over Kitai's {8-Spades}{5-Spades}.

Kitai was left with just 1,125, and he got his remaining stack in two hands later with {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs} against the {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} of Govert Metaal. The {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop was good for Kitai, but the turn {A-Clubs} put Metaal back in front, and the {3-Hearts} on the river sealed the bustout.

Nanos Sends Stack to Buddiga

Level 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Pratyush Buddiga
Pratyush Buddiga

Pratyush Buddiga raised to 1,200 from under the gun and Konstantinos Nanos three-bet to 2,900 in the cutoff, Buddiga called. On the {J-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop, Buddiga check-called a bet of 1,350 and checked again the {6-Clubs} turn. Nanos bet 6,725 and Buddiga took a long time before check-raising to 16,500. Nanos tanked equally long before shoving for 43,000 and Buddiga snap-called.

Konstantinos Nanos: {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Pratyush Buddiga: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}

The Greek was already drawing dead, making the {10-Hearts} on the river a formality. His facial expression upon showdown spoke for itself, it was a move gone horribly wrong.

Buddiga Doubles Through Bedell

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Pratyush Buddiga
Pratyush Buddiga

Xiaoyan Luo started the action with a raise to 950 and Tom-Aksel Bedell three-bet to 2,800 from one seat over. In the big blind, Pratyush Buddiga four-bet to 7,500 and Luo folded, Bedell called.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Spades} and Buddiga bet 6,500. Bedell moved all in and Buddiga called.

Pratyush Buddiga: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}
Tom-Aksel Bedell: {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

The {7-Diamonds} turn and {5-Clubs} river failed to improve Bedell and the stacks were counted. Buddiga was at risk for 41,750 and Bedell had that covered by just one big blind to remain with a mere dust.

Bluff Gone Wrong; Fast Shoves Into Drinan's Nuts

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Connor Drinan
Connor Drinan

Preflop Dietrich Fast reraised to 2,800 from the button, and only Connor Drinan in the cutoff called.

Flop came down {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and players checked through to the turn; {Q-Diamonds}.

Drinan lead for 3,500 and received a call from Fast, and together they saw the river complete the four-flush with {9-Diamonds}.

After 30 seconds of thinking Drinan decided on a massive bet of 15,000, and that put Fast into the deep tank. After a few minutes of deliberation the German shipped it all over the line, and after double checking his hole cards, Drinan called and turned over the nut flush {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

Fast tried to muck his hand, but Drinan requested to have it shown, and eventually saw Fast making a move holding {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.
