Neuville Leads EPT13 Malta High Roller After Day 2 - Jorgensen and Jedlicka in Contention

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Pierre Neuville

Day 2 of the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT13 Malta High Roller saw seven players enter the competition with a fresh stack of 50,000 to boost the overall field to 144 entries. A prize pool of €1,396,800 emerged with the top 20 spots to be paid at least €8,070 for their efforts and after 10 levels of 60 minutes each, the field was whittled down to the last eight hopefuls.

2015 November Niner and serial qualifier Pierre Neuville claimed the lead with 1,695,000 and the Belgian is joined by the likes of Cristian Egues (1,515,000), Liviu Ignat (1,012,000), Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen (982,000), Michael Kane (810,000), Stefan "mindgamer" Jedlicka (443,000), Charlie Carrel (410,000) and [Removed:172] (334,000).

With 80 players taking to the tables, the first two hours saw 31 of them run out of chips entirely, among them were Max Silver, Koray Aldemir, Pratyush Buddiga, Sam Greenwood, Benjamin Pollak and Adrian Mateos. Simon Mattsson lost a big flip with ace-king against the pocket queens of Armando Collado and Davidi Kitai followed in same fashion against Stephen Chidwick.

Ignat became a big stack after the double elimination of Steve O'Dwyer and Govert Metaal, while [Removed:17] couldn't hold up with nines against the ace-king of Ben Heath. Sebastian Veghinas made the right call with ace-king only to see Alexander Ivarsson get there with a gutshot.

Down to the last three tables, Frederik Jensen lost his short stack to Egues before Felix Stephensen ran with pocket tens into the pocket aces of Philipp Gruissem. Piotr Franczak's roller coaster ride ended two shy of the money and a huge move by Collado with bottom pair let the bubble burst, as Ivarsson called with top pair and the flush draw.

Once the final 20 were in the money, Gleb Tremzin, EPT12 Malta High Roller third-place finisher Mikalai Vaskaboinikau and Jyri Merivirta busted in quick succession. Heath lost a flip to Ivarsson and the Swede was the dominating chip leader when the last two tables were set.

Marcin Chmielewski ran with pocket eights into the pocket aces of Neuville and the ace-queen of Egues and had to settle for 16th place. A short-stacked Chidwick followed in 15th and the field was suddenly reduced to 12 when Farid Jattin and Ivarsson were knocked out by Jorgensen. Christophe Larquemin's pocket nines could not fade the flush draw and two over cards of Kramer and the Frenchman, who survived the bubble with less than three big blinds was gone in 12th place.

Another double elimination set the unofficial final table with 40 minutes left in level 20. Cate Hall three-bet all in with ace-queen, Egues reshoved with pocket eights and Gruissem called with ace-king only to see Egues flop a full house. The remainder of the level saw just one further player bust, Hari Bercovici ran with queens into kings. Neuville then claimed the lead after winning a big three-way hand against Egues and Jorgensen.

Hari Bercovici Eliminated in 9th Place (€33,540)

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Hari Bercovici
Hari Bercovici

Preflop [Removed:172] opened to 33,000 from early position and the action folded all the way around to Hari Bercovici in the big blind. he didn't waste any time putting his 130,000 over the betting line and Kramer called even faster.

Hari Bercovici: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
[Removed:172]: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

A big setup was looking to go Kramer's way, and the runout of {8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{9-Spades} didn't change a single thing about that. Bercovici shook his head and exited, while Kramer added the chips to his stack.

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

Philipp Gruissem raised to 36,000 only to see Cate Hall shove right behind him for 178,000. Folded around to Cristian Egues in the big blind, who thought for 30 seconds before announcing all-in.

"Wow, I have such a big hand. I can't wait anymore", Gruissem spoke mostly to himself before he committed his chips to the already massive pot.

Cate Hall: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Christian Egues: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Philipp Gruissem: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}

"Come on," Gruissem asked the dealer, but by that time the {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop had already made it to the felt, and both Hall and Gruissem were drawing incredibly slim for the win.

The turn and river came {3-Spades} and {K-Clubs}, and Egues scooped the huge pot, eliminating two players in the process.

Christophe Larquemin: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Liviu Ignat: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

The {8-Hearts} on the turn left Larquemin drawing dead, making the {9-Spades} river a formality, and he had to settle for 12th place and a payday of €24,440.

Farid Jattin Eliminated in 14th Place (€22,340) and Alexander Ivarsson Eliminated in 13th Place (€24,440)

Alexander Ivarsson opened to 27,000 from UTG+1 before Farid Jattin jammed his stack of 79,000 from the very next seat. Theo Jorgensen tried to do the math but ended up declaring "I raise the minimum", which led to a total bet of 131,000.

Back on Ivarsson he put his 460,000 chips at risk, and Theo Jorgensen couldn't get his stack over the line fast enough.

"Yes, let's go ahead and call", Jorgensen said while turning over his kings, and they were a favorite to score a double knockout.

Theo Jorgensen: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Farid Jattin: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Alexander Ivarsson: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The flop came {3-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}.

"Yes, so far so good. Now a blank on the turn", Jorgensen said directed at the dealer, but it was not a blank. It was the case king - {K-Diamonds}, that cemented the big pot for the Danish Team PokerStars Pro.

"That's even better", Jorgensen happily said, as he already began stacking his newly won chips before the {4-Hearts} river was put on the table.

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Back from the break, Caitlin Hall raised to 30,000 from the button and Stephen Chidwick defended his big blind. On the flop of {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, Chidwick checked and called a continuation bet worth 20,000.

On the {7-Hearts} turn, Chidwick checked again and Hall asked "how much do you have behind Stephen?", then bet enough to give Chidwick the option to call all in or fold with half of his short stack already invested. Chidwick quickly called and the cards were tabled.

Stephen Chidwick: {Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Caitlin Hall: {A-Spades}{2-Spades}

The {10-Spades} on the river was a blank and Chidwick was eliminated in 15th place for a payday of €22,340.

Two Big Hands Eats Into the Last Break of the Day

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Michael Kane
Michael Kane

When the tournament staff announced the 20-minute break, there was a big hand developing on both of the two remaining tables.

Neuville vs. Gruissem
On table one Pierre Neuville raised to 27,000 before Gruissem made it 62,000 to go on the button. Neuville called.

Flop came down {2-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Neuville check-called 55,000.

The turn {J-Spades} was checked through before river {6-Clubs} hit the felt.

On the river Neuville checked yet again, prompting Gruissem to cut out 125,000 and slide them over the line. Neuville thought long and hard, before beginning an almost ritualistic dance with his chips. Ultimately he put in a raise to 264,000, leaving himself only about 80,000 behind.

"Why so small, don't you want it all?", Gruissem asked. Neuville didn't answer.

"You ARE a bit crazy, Pierre. Otherwise I would have folded long ago", Gruissem followed up. Still no response.

In the end he let it go, and Neuville let out a big grin while stacking the chips.

Kane vs. Ivarsson
On table two it was Kane and Ivarsson battling it out.

Preflop Ivarsson raised to 25,000, and only Kane called.

Flop came down {5-Spades}{A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}, and Kane check-called 25,000 to see the {9-Diamonds} on the turn. This time the price was 70,000 from Ivarsson, and once again Kane called.

River came {J-Clubs}, and after being checked to a third time Ivarsson bet a hefty 175,000. Kane spend a few minutes contemplating his options and ended up calling and turning over his {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. They were good against Ivarsson's {10-Spades}{J-Diamonds}, and the Brit scooped the pot.

Marcin Chmielewski Eliminated in 16th Place (€20,250)

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Marcin Chmielewski
Marcin Chmielewski

After losing the all in against Hari Bercovici, Marcin Chmiewski moved all in for 148,000 from under the gun. The action folded to Pierre Neuville and he also moved all in with slightly more. Cristian Egues asked for a count and Neuville's shove was for 170,000. The Spaniard eventually called to create a three-way all in.

Marcin Chmiewski: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Pierre Neuville: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}
Cristian Egues: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

The {A-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Spades} flop left Chmiewski with little hope of a comeback, and the {6-Clubs} on the turn made things official. A now meaningless {4-Clubs} appeared on the river and Neuville essentially tripled up thanks to the small blind and antes, while Chmiewski was eliminated in 16th place for €20,250.

Alexander Ivarsson raised to 25,000 from the button, but that was not sufficient for Ben Heath. He reraised to 84,000, and with action back on Ivarsson he gave it a good think. Ultimately he announced all-in, and Heath almost turned over his hand before announcing "Call".

Ivarsson's {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} were racing with Heath's {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, but it was anything but a race after the flop landed {10-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}.

Turn {K-Hearts} gave Heath nines as well, but the river was the {3-Hearts}, and Heath was officially eliminated.
