All Hail the King: Dan Smith Leads after Day 1a of the EPT Grand Final Main Event

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Dan Smith - Chip leader

On Monday, the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final kicked off with Day 1a of the Main Event. Leading the remaining 53 players is Dan Smith. After "some bluffing and two full houses" after the dinner break, he bagged 136,500 chips, and biting at his heels are Pablo Fernandez, Freddy Deeb, Arlo Dotson, and Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody.

Only 108 players turned up for the first of two flights here in the beautiful city of Monaco, which is 163 players short of last year. In order to reach the same number of players that played in the Season 8 EPT Grand Final, Day 1b will need to attract 557 players.

Among the few participants today was Season 9 EPT Player of the Year leader Jan Bendik. Bendik, who currently holds a near 1,000-point lead over Kent Lundmark (although the EPT Berlin points have yet to been calculated), got off to a nice start and busted both Alex Bilokur and Richard Milne. Bilokur moved all in on the turn with two pair, only to be snapped off by Bendik who held Broadway. The river was a brick, and the Season 8 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 High Roller winner was eliminated.

Bendik finished the night with 108,900 chips, and is looking to finish the season out strong and ship the POY award.

Cody finished Day 1a among the leaders. In the penultimate level of the evening, he won a very strange pot off of Swede Daniel Carlsson. After check-calling bets from Cody on the flop and the turn, Carlsson appeared to have check-raised Cody on the river. The bet was less than double Cody's, but enough to make it a raise, yet Carlsson opted to open up his hand, revealing a pair of jacks. Confused, Cody did the same, tabling a pair of aces, and the Brit picked up the pot.

Cody was one of the few players who crossed the six-figure threshold, and will return on Day 2 119,000 chips.

Another player who was in good form on Day 1a was Dotson. Dotson won a crucial hand against Micah Raskin and Marvin Rettenmaier, wherein he and Raskin called a three-bet from Rettenmaier. Both Dotson and Raskin called a bet from Rettenmaier on a four-high flop, and the turn brought an eight. Dotson and Rettenmaier checked to Raskin, who fired out a bet, and both Dotson and Rettenmaier called. A king completed the board, bringing a third spade, and Dotson led out for the first time. Rettenmaier quickly folded, but Raskin called. Dotson tabled queen-jack of spades for the second-nut flush, and Raskin mucked his hand.

Dotson ended the day on 127,100, later finishing off Rettenmaier and Raskin was eliminated as well.

Joining Rettenmaier and Raskin on the rail today were Alex Gomes, Mike McDonald, Kane Kalas, Griffin Benger, Sorel Mizzi, Erik Seidel, Gilbert Diaz, Team PokerStars SportStar Boris Becker and Team Poker Stars Pros Jonathan Duhamel and Vanessa Rousso.

Rousso was crippled in a very interesting hand. According to Pratyush Buddiga, Ignat Liviu opened to 1,200, Rousso three-bet to 3,200 out of the small blind, and Liviu four-bet to 8,000. Rousso called. Rousso then check-called on every street, including the river where Liviu moved all in for 22,375. Liviu showed two queens for a rivered set of queens, and, to her disappointment, Rousso was forced to show jack-six off suit for fourth pair.

Minutes later, at a new table, Rousso found her self all in with king-deuce of spades on a two-spade flop. She could not best her opponent’s top pair however, and she was eliminated.

Becker was eliminated with unknown action on the last hand of the evening.

Day 1b of the EPT Grand Final Main Event will begin on Tuesday at 12:00 CET. We caught the action when Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso called a bet on the turn in a pot that turned out to be monstrous. Every single player that was at the table stood around during the river action and that gave us the opportunity to ask Pratyush Buddiga what exactly went down.

The action started when Ignat Liviu, known online as "0Human0", raised to 1,200 from the button. Rousso three-bet from the small blind to 3,200 and Liviu grabbed the opportunity to put in a four-bet to 8,000. Rousso made the call and the flop brought out {3-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}.

Rousso checked the flop and Liviu threw out 7,500 and the Team PokerStars Pro made the call. On the turn the {6-Diamonds} hit and this time Rousso check-called 16,500.

The river brought out the {Q-Diamonds} and Rousso checked a third time. Liviu moved all in right away for a total of 22,375 and Rousso went deep into the tank. After staring Liviu down, and trying to get a response out of her opponent, Rousso started talking.

"I hate this hand," she said as time went on. Eventually Rousso made the call and Liviu turned over {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} immediately.

"Oh my god, that's so sick," Rousso said.

"Wow, so sick..." she added as she threw her cards towards the muck.

A member of the tournament staff was a witness to this hand and said that Rousso had to table her cards because Liviu was all in. Rousso was not particularly happy with this rule that has been enforced for quite a while now at tournaments all over the world.

"I don't have to show my cards!" Rousso snapped at the floor staff right when he pointed this out to her.

"Call the floor over!" Rousso added as her cards were almost tabled and turned back down again.

"I am the floor," the member of the floor staff responded as some players chuckled.

"That's bullsh*t!" Rousso added as her cards were turned over. Rousso showed {J-Hearts}{6-Spades} and that left the rest of the table astounded. The table broke right after this hand and Rousso Tweeted the following about it.

Dotson Fails to Realise He Busted Mad Marvin

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Marvin Rettenmaier
Marvin Rettenmaier

A funny scene happened as Marvin Rettenmaier was being eliminated by Arlo Dotson that left both players confused as neither were on the same page.

They were heads up to the turn of a {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} board and around 16,500 had made it into the middle. Rettenmaier had 17,450 back and in they all went from the big blind. Dotson was on the button and called after getting a count of the shove.

"I better get there!" said Rettenmaier as he opened his straight and flush drawing {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}.

Dotson opened {j-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and faded all outs on the {a-Hearts} river.

As Rettenmaier was getting up to leave Dotson sat looking downwards and quietly cursed a few times, but it was loud enough so Rettenmaier could here. When Dotson looked up again he saw pot being pushed his way and his eyes opened wide as he re-checked the board. "Oh, I thought he made a straight!" said Dotson in a Texas accent.

"I misread the board," he continued as he raked in the pot. Rettenmaier was now satisfied with his opponent as he saw the funny side of the situation after being confused for a minute.

Even the Greats Can Make Mistakes

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Erik Seidel

"A bit of a mare!" was how Craig McCorkell described Erik Seidel's exit hand.

We approached the back end of the hand when it seemed as if Seidel has six-bet to 14,000 out of the small blind. He was battling Mikita Badziakouski who was in the big blind and shoved after Seidel's latest raise.

Seidel only had 26,000 total and said whilst half giggling, "I guess I've priced myself in!" and called.

Seidel: {q-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Badziakouski: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The board ran {k-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}.

Seidel said to PokerNews that he doesn't know what he's going to do for the week. He has three days to kill before the high roller tournament begins.
