Brian Rast Leads After Day 1 of Poker Masters Event #5: $100,000 NLHE; Negreanu in Third

Level 9 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Brian Rast

Day 1 of the Poker Masters Event #5: $100,000 drew 35 players, and with faster-than-anticipated action, the field was whittled down to 15 players with inaugural Super High Roller Bowl champ Brian Rast and his stack of 959,000 leading the way.

The final tally will actually be at least 36 as we’ve been told Byron Kaverman will jump into action tomorrow. The winner will ultimately walk away with at more than $1.5 million (exact payouts and prizes will be announced once registration comes to a close), which is enough to give the winner The Poker Masters Purple Jacket™, provided those up there in earnings don’t make deep runs and add even more to their totals.

For example, Steffen Sontheimer is still alive with a stack of 696,500. He’s made three final tables this week and even won Event #2. He’s currently atop the Poker Masters leaderboard with $1,221,000 million, meaning another cash could possibly lock it up for him.

The next six players on the earnings leaderboard busted on Day 1, meaning the only remaining players even close to Sontheimer in earnings are Fedor Holz ($550,000), Jake Schindler ($409,500), and Stefan Schillhabel ($306,000).

It’s also worth noting that if Daniel Negreanu (745,500) can pull out a win, and Sontheimer doesn’t add considerably to his total, “Kid Poker” stands to win over $1 million via his highly-publicized side bets.

The tournament kicked off with a quick elimination. Just 10 minutes in, Event #1 champ Nick Schulman, who began the day third in Poker Masters earnings with $918,000, flopped trip tens and played it strong against Scott Seiver. Unfortunately for Schulman, Seiver held pocket queens and a third lady appeared on the river. The chips went in and that was all she wrote for Schulman.

Before the first break of the day, Doug Polk joined him on the rail. Polk, who sat fifth in Poker Masters earnings with $612,000 thanks to a runner-up finish in Event #4, shoved holding a straight only to run it into the heart flush of Sontheimer.

Others who fell before Level 5 finished were Lawrence Greenberg, Adrian Mateos, Alan Schein, Sean Winter, Jason Koon and Poker Masters Event #4 winner Brandon Adams. In Level 6, Event #3 champ Bryn Kenney exited when his pocket fours failed to hold against the queen-eight suited of Ben Tollerene. That left Sontheimer as the only Poker Masters $50K prelim winner remaining.

Others to fall before night’s end were Sergio Aido, Isaac Haxton, David Peters, Dominik Nitsche, Nick Petrangelo, Cary Katz, Rainer Kempe, Koray Aldemir, Tom Marchese, Seiver, Matt Hyman, and Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel.

Day 2 of the Poker Masters Event #5: $100,000 NLHE will get underway at 2 p.m. local time here is Las Vegas. We’ll once again be bringing you all the action and eliminations straight from the tournament floor, so be sure to join us then.

Fedor Holz raised to 11,000 under the gun and Seth Davies called from the cutoff. Jake Schindler came along from the small blind and then Matt Hyman three-bet all in for 107,000 from the big.

Holz folded, Davies called, and Schindler got out of the way.

Hyman: {k-}{9-}
Davies: {a-}{q-}

Hyman failed to hit, and his elimination has brought the field down to 14. As such, the tournament has been paused and players will bag and tag on Day 1.

When they return tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time, action will resume with 40:38 remaining in Level 10. Stay tuned for a list of chip counts and a full recap of the day's action.

Holz Busts Up Erik Seidel

Level 9 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Erik Seidel limped in from the hijack and Fedor Holz raised to 24,000 on the button. The action was folded back to Seidel who reraised to 72,000. Holz eyed up Seidel's stack and then announced all in. Seidel had around 100,000 remaining in front of him and stuck it in the middle.

Holz: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Seidel: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

The flop came {j-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Holz was still in prime position to knock out Seidel. The turn was the {9-Spades} giving Holz a set of nines but Seidel picked up a flush draw. The river landed the {4-Diamonds} and that was the end of Seidel's run in The Poker Masters.

Short-Stacked Scott Seiver Succumbs

Level 9 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

Action folded around to Brian Rast in the small blind and he simply moved all in to put the pressure on Scott Seiver, who was short stacked in the big blind. Seiver looked down at his cards and quickly called off for 67,500.

Seiver: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Rast: {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

It was a race and Seiver was looking to hold to double. That didn't happen though as the {j-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop paired Rast. The {K-Spades} turn left Seiver looking for a seven on the river, but it wasn't in the cards as the {6-Clubs} bricked instead.

Marchese Doesn't Get There Against Rast

Level 8 : 2,000/4,000, 3,000 ante
Tom Marchese
Tom Marchese

Brian Rast raised to 9,000 from the hijack and Tom Marchese responded with an all-in three-bet for 44,000 more from the button. Both blinds folded and Rast called.

Marchese: {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Rast: {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}

It was a flip, but Marchese needed to improve to stay alive. That proved easier said than done though as the board ran out a dry {5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{j-Spades}{a-Hearts}.

Daniel Negreanu Eliminates Koray Aldemir to Vault Over 1 Million

Level 8 : 2,000/4,000, 3,000 ante
Koray Aldemir
Koray Aldemir

After Koray Aldemir raised from the cutoff with the {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}, Daniel Negreanu three-bet him light holding the {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades} in the small blind.

Aldemir just called and promptly flopped a set on the {j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{k-Spades} flop. Negreanu, who flopped an open-ended straight draw, bet 16,000 and Aldemir called to see the {2-Hearts} turn.

Negreanu took another stab at it with a bet of 45,000, but he couldn't shake Aldemir, who just called. Fortunately for Negreanu, he hit his gin card when the {9-Spades} river gave him the nuts.

Negreanu bet 125,000 and Aldemir hit the tank. He used a time extension and then announced himself all in for 326,000 total. Negreanu snap-called and just like that Aldemir was out.

Rainer Kempe
Rainer Kempe

The action was folded around to Fedor Holz in the small blind and with Rainer Kempe in the big blind sitting on a stack of around 45,000, Holz raised enough to put his fellow German all-in. Kempe looked down at his cards and made the call.

Holz: {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Kempe: {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}

The board ran out {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and Holz made a pair of sevens on the turn to eliminated Kempe.

Bonomo Over 1 Million

Level 8 : 2,000/4,000, 3,000 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Catching the action with a battle of the blinds occurring, Ben Tollerene had raised from the big blind to 39,000.

Justin Bonomo responded by making it 135,000, and Tollerene called.

The flop landed {7-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and after using a time extension button, Bonomo bet 80,000.

Tollerene folded, and with that pot, Bonomo moves over the 1 million chip mark.

Scott Seiver Flops the Joint to Eliminate Cary Katz

Level 7 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

A short-stacked Cary Katz moved all in for his last 27,000 from the cutoff and Scott Seiver isolated by three-betting all in from the small blind.

Katz: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Seiver: {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Katz was looking for some help, but instead he was left drawing dead after the flop came down {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{a-Spades} to give Seiver a full house. The {3-Spades} turn and {2-Clubs} river were just formalities before Seiver was pushed the pot.

"Just wasn't a good day," Katz told Maria Ho in his post-elimination interview. "When players are this aggressive, you've got to hit some hands."

Katz added: "I think the Poker Masters has been an amazing success."

Bonomo Soars Into Chip Lead

Level 7 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Stephen Chidwick opened to 6,500 from under the gun and Justin Bonomo called in the hijack as Christian Christner called from the button.

With the action on Stefan Schillhabel in the big blind, he three-bet to 34,000 and Chidwick folded. Both Bonomo and Christner called as the flop landed {A-Clubs}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds}.

Schillhabel bet out 38,500 and Bonomo was the only caller as the turn landed the {2-Spades} and Schillhabel checked.

Bonomo bet 60,000, and Schillhabel mucked. With this pot, Bonomo now soars into the overwhelming chip lead with over 760,000 in chips.
