Khoroshenin, Dvoress and Silver At the Top After Day 1 of the High Roller in Monte-Carlo

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Will the fourth time be the charm for Daniel Dvoress?
Will the fourth time be the charm for Daniel Dvoress?

Day 1 of the 2017 PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® €25,750 High Roller was cut to seven levels of 60 minutes instead of the usual 10 levels in order to give all high-stakes regulars the chance to watch the upcoming semi-final of the Champions League here in the Principality of Monaco.

So far, 126 players entered and another 17 single re-entries were purchased to create a 143-entry strong field. However, the registration remains open for another three levels on Day 2, and until then hopefuls can join the action via either their first or second entry in order to take a shot at the guaranteed $1,000,000 first-place prize. Furthermore, all remaining players at the start of level 11 will receive an additional time bank to give themselves an extra minute of consideration.

The High Roller field was filled with a ton of big names, many of which already had plenty of success at the international poker tables, and it was EPT10 Vienna champion Oleksii Khoroshenin who ended up on top of the counts with 208,000. He was closely followed by Daniel Dvoress with 207,100, and the Canadian is enjoying an exceptional run at the French Riviera, already having final tabled no fewer than three high rollers in the span of one week and racked up an astonishing €1,584,800 in the process.

Other big stacks through to Day 2 include Max Silver (202,400), EPT11 Deauville High Roller champion Josip Simunic (195,500), Justin Bonomo (183,300), Julian Stuer (176,000), poker stalwart Erik Seidel (165,500), Charlie Carrel (143,000), Jimmy Guerrero (143,000), Byron Kaverman (130,200), Dan Colman (128,700), Ryan Riess (110,500) and Mustapha Kanit (101,800)

The PokerStars Team saw Daniel Negreanu (150,800), Felipe Ramos (100,200), Liv Boeree (95,800), Jason Mercier (91,100), and Igor Kurganov (71,000) advance. Only Vanessa Selbst failed to bag up chips after running her short stack with pocket nines into the pocket tens of Javier Gomez Zapatero. Selbst can enter again on her second entry in the first three levels of Day 2 and the same applies for all that participated today and ran out of chips entirely.

Among those to buy in twice and bust as many times were Rocco Palumbo, Orpen Kisacikoglu, Jack Salter and Neel Murthy. Other notables that were eliminated include [Removed:17], Ramin Hajiyev, Fabrice Soulier, Jason Wheeler, Thiago Crema, Igor Yaroshevskyy, Salman Behbehani and Ihar Soika.

Max Silver already had almost four times the starting stack during the first two levels of the day, and the biggest pot came off a turned full house that got paid off by Eric Sfez with the nut flush. Julian Stuer joined the big stacks after sending Rocco Palumbo to the rail. Palumbo four-bet preflop and then check-called a shove on a ten-high board with three clubs, holding ace-king only, to see Stuer turn over pocket aces. Orpen Kisacikoglu lost the first bullet with pocket queens against the pocket kings of Josip Simunic after a jack-high flop, and Bryn Kenney ran with pocket kings into the pocket aces of Javier Gomez Zapatero.

More than one third of the field has been eliminated thus far. The action will resume tomorrow at 12.30 p.m. local time and ten levels of one hour each are tentatively scheduled for the second and penultimate day of the event. The blinds will recommence at 500-1,000 with a running ante of 100, giving all new entrants in the first level of the day 50 big blinds worth. As usual, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the action.

Sammartino Gets There, Haxton Out

Level 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Isaac Haxton's tournament has come to a brutal end at the hands of Dario Sammartino. In a button against small blind situation, Haxton had four-bet to 9,500 after Sammartino had put in a three-bet.

Sammartino five-bet shoved around 45,000 effectively. Haxton double-checked his hole cards before making the call.

Dario Sammartino: {J-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Isaac Haxton: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}

Sammartino's timing couldn't be much worse, although he picked up some outs after the {5-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Spades} flop.

The {J-Hearts} landed on the turn and Sammartino took the lead with two pair. Haxton just nodded when the jack appeared and nodded even more when the {J-Clubs} on the river improved the Italian to an improbable full house.

After counting the stacks, Haxton had slightly less than Sammartino and was eliminated. Sammartino couldn't hide a smile when stacking up Haxton's chips.

Fast and Urban Clash Big

Level 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Dietrich Fast
Dietrich Fast

Dietrich Fast opened to 1,300 from middle position and David Urban to his left three-bet to 3,800. Fast wasn't done yet and put in a four-bet to 10,200, which Urban called. The flop was {J-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} and both players checked.

On the {2-Hearts} turn, Fast bet 13,500 and Urban called. The river was the {A-Diamonds} and Fast checked. Urban used up nearly all of his allowed seconds before shoving all in, putting Fast to a decision for his remaining stack of 40,000.

Fast rose up from his chair and went in deep thought. The German studied Urban intensely and used all of his time bank to come up with a decision. Motionless, the headphone-wearing Urban stared blankly at the felt in order to give nothing away.

With mere seconds remaining on his final time bank, Fast slammed his stack in the middle to make the call.

Dietrich Fast: {A-}{K-}
David Urban: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Urban's flopped straight bested Fast's top pair and the German was eliminated.

Kenney Runs Kings Into Aces

Level 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Bryn Kenney
Bryn Kenney

Bryn Kenney's first bullet in this tournament came up short after running kings into aces. It was Javier Gomez Zapatero who had cold four-bet to 8,000 preflop after some earlier action.

Kenney five-bet shoved 48,725 with {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and Gomez had him covered with {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}. A low board meant a re-entry for Kenney.

Stuer Sends Palumbo Packing

Level 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Rocco Palumbo
Rocco Palumbo

Picking up the action with a raise to 2,900 by Julian Stuer on the button, Rocco Palumbo then followed that up with a reraise to 8,000 in the cutoff and Stuer called. Both players checked the {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop and Palumbo bet 10,300 on the {6-Hearts} turn. Stuer called and Palumbo slowed down, checking the {6-Spades} river.

Stuer moved all in for effectively 28,150, as that's what Palumbo had left. The Italian used one time bank and started table talk, but Stuer showed no reaction at all. A dsecond time bank was used and Palumbo then called. Stuer rolled over {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} and Palumbo mucked {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}.

Kisacikoglu Hits The Rail

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante
Orpen Kisacikoglu
Orpen Kisacikoglu

A massive confrontation between Josip Simunic and Orpen Kisacikoglu has left the latter empty-handed. The pot was already five-bet preflop and contained around 40,000, with Kisacikoglu putting in the last raise.

On the {J-Spades}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop, Simunic checked, Kisacikoglu bet 10,000, Simunic check-raised all in and Kisacikoglu reluctantly called it off for 29,250 total.

Josip Simunic: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}
Orpen Kisacikoglu: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Kisacikoglu was drawing very slim and was dead after the {K-Hearts} landed on the turn. Simunic had the Turkish high roller slightly covered, who no doubt will be back shortly to fire his second bullet.

The €25,750 High Roller Kicks Off Today!

Daniel Dvoress
Daniel Dvoress

The last of the many 2017 PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® festival High Roller tournaments kicks off today at 12:30 p.m. The always popular €25,750 High Roller will play down to a winner over the course of the next three days. Alexandru Papazian of Romania lifted the trophy last year, besting a 231-strong field to claim the trophy and a massive bankroll boost of €1,197,000. Papazian will not be defending his title yet, as the Romanian is still playing in the Main Event.

Over the past eight days, many of the worlds best have conglomerated in "Le Sporting" at Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort to test their skill in the elite fields. Ole Schemion, Bryn Kenney, Adrian Mateos, Philipp Gruissem and Imad Derwiche all found their share of success in the big events over the week. Derwiche will be one to watch today, as the self-proclaimed "fish" final tabled this event in the past two years. Derwiche finished eight last year and was runner-up to Charlie Carrel the year before.

High-roller staples Daniel Dvoress and Steve O'Dwyer have been on a tear in the French Riviera. Dvoress final tabled no fewer than three high rollers already and racked up an astonishing €1,584,800 in the process. O'Dwyer chopped last night's €25,750 Single-Day High Roller with Philipp Gruissem, his third final table of the week as well, and totaled €687,065 so far.

The plan for today has been slightly altered: just seven levels of 60 minutes are scheduled, with breaks of 15 minutes in between. Play should be suspended around 8:15 p.m. local time, in time for players to watch the Champions League semi-final match of AS Monaco versus Juventus if they do so desire. The starting stack will be 50,000 and, due to the shorter first day, late registration will be open up until the third level of the second day.

As usual, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide live updates from the all the action at the tables. Check back regularly to find out who will lift the last PokerStars Championship Monte-Carlo High Roller trophy on Friday.
