Vardjavand Leads; Jensen and Derkowski Among Big Stacks After Day 1 of the High Roller in Hamburg

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Toni Vardjavand
Toni Vardjavand

The most expensive tournament of the 2017 PokerStars Festival at Casino Schenefeld in Hamburg came with a buy-in of €2,200 and a cap of 80 players and that number of unique participants was reached during the registration period. Once the cards went back in the air after the dinner break, another 10 hopefuls had fired the optional single re-entry to boost the field to 90 entries in total.

After 12 levels of 40 minutes each, only 28 players bagged up and remain in the hunt for their share of the €174,600 prize pool. The top 13 spots will earn at least €3,490 for their efforts, while the winner can look forward to a payday of €46,380. Best-positioned to take down the title and PokerStars Festival High Roller trophy is well-known Hamburg-based poker player Toni Vardjavand with massive 273,900, more than nine times the starting stack.

Vardjavand is followed by fellow local player Andre Haneberg with 221,900, while Sven Leu completes the overnight podium with 182,900. Furthermore, three former European Poker Tour Main Event champions follow next with EPT3 Baden winner Thang Duc Nguyen (180,300), EPT8 Madrid champion Frederik Jensen (178,200) and EPT4 Warsaw winner Michael Schulze (78,200) all in contention.

Other notables among the Day 1 survivors are Grzegorz Derkowski (144,700), Daniel Belov (98,200), [Removed:65] (71,200), Martin Wendt (54,300) and Aleksandar Tomovic (49,900). Florian Bach was down to a mere 300 chips with the ante already at 100 before staging a massive comeback and reaching Day 2 with 67,900.

The field in Germany's second biggest city was a mixture of German players and nearby countries, especially Denmark had plenty of participants in contention with such big names as Peter Jaksland, Mick Heder and Gisle Olsen made the trip to Hamburg but all failed to bag up. Other notables that took part and busted throughout Day 1 were the Russians [Removed:19] and Andrey Andreev, as well as the Italians Francesco Delfoco, Angelo Benedetto and Salvatore Camarda.

Daniel Montagnolli entered a few levels late and quickly rose to the top of the leader board, becoming the first player with six digits after sending Sokolovskiy to the rail with a big hero call on a paired ten-high board holding ten-eight for tens and sixes. Sokolovskiy was caught bluffing with king-seven for a busted straight draw, and fellow countryman Andreev busted for a second time on that very same table shortly after.

What followed was a roller coaster ride for Montagnolli, who eventually busted with pocket nines against the queen-jack of Toni Vardjavand, who got there with a move on a ten-high flop. Vardjavand never looked back after that and eventually claimed a comfortable lead for the final day of the tournament.

The remaining 28 players will return to Casino Schenefeld on November 22nd 2017 as of 5 p.m. local time with level 13 and blinds of 1,200/2,400 and a running ante of 400. Whether or not the event will indeed play down to a champion late at night or require an additional day remains to be seen. The first of four starting days of the 2017 PokerStars Festival Hamburg €1,100 Main Event also gets underway at 1 p.m. local time and the PokerNews live reporting team will provide updates from the floor for both tournaments.

Feddersen Eliminated by Haneberg

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Andre Haneberg
Andre Haneberg

Andre Haneberg raised to 2,600 from the hijack and action folded to Jesper Feddersen in the small blind who shoved. The player in the big blind asked how much it was and while the dealer was counting it out, he folded. The decision was on Haneberg now. He also asked how much it was and the dealer confirmed it was 27,400. He grabbed some chips and put them in as a call.

Andre Haneberg: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Jesper Feddersen: {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {Q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{4-Hearts} - no help for Feddersen and he was eliminated from the tournament.

PokerStars Festival Hamburg: Who will follow Holke, Peters, Alt and Danzer?

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Tom Holke
Tom Holke

May 2015. The month and year that a PokerStars event first took place in Hamburg, and specifically in Casino Schenefeld. The inaugural German Eureka Poker Tour event was a great success and so we returned last year to rinse and repeat. And here we are again for a third year but under a different guise. The Eureka Poker is no more but nothing has been lost and we return under the PokerStars Festival banner.

Montagnolli Gone; Bach Busts Behrens

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Florian Bach
Florian Bach

The cards were all but rushed away and Daniel Montagnolli left his table with a mix of pain and smile, then delivered the details of his final hand. According to Montagnolli, Toni Vardjavand three-bet on the button and Montagnolli called in the small blind.

On a {10-}{4-Spades}{3-Spades} flop, Montagnolli bet and called the shove of Vardjavand with pocket nines to see the latter turn over {Q-}{J-} only. An ace on the turn and a king on the river gave Vardjavand the nut straight and another player on the table joked "so that's how you win tournaments".

The miracle comeback of Florian Bach continues as well after he just sent Hermann Behrends to the rail. Bach bet a {J-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop from the button for 7,800 and Behrends moved all in for 29,500. Bach called after some consideration and tabled {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} for the over pair, while Behrends was drawing with {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

With the {A-Clubs} turn, the sweat got even bigger, but the {7-Hearts} river was a blank to send Behrends to the rail.

PokerStars Festival Hamburg: Action's in the Open after Nack wins Poker Cup for €20K

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Reinhard Nack
Reinhard Nack

When we hear that a PokerStars Festival Cup event has come to an end, we usually assume that Sander van Wesemael has won it. After all, the young Dutchman took down three consecutive events (the Marbella Poker Cup, Lille Poker Cup, and Barcelona Poker Cup) throughout June, July and August in 2017.

But seeing as Van Wesemael let someone else have a chance in Dublin (Ankit Ahuja took that one down), it wasn't too surprising to discover we had a first-time winner here in Hamburg too.

Derkowski and Pham Double

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Phong Than Pham
Phong Than Pham

Francesco Delfoco was sent to the rail while Fredrick Andersson re-entered just before the end of the level.

Jan Timo Jobmann was all in for 10,300 on the {A-Clubs}{7-Spades}{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and Said Hossein Madani eventually called. Jobmann showed {A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Madani split the main pot of 14,000 with {A-Spades}{6-Spades}.

Soon after Madani got into a raising war with Phong Than Pham and five-bet before calling the shove of the Dane for 29,925.

Phong Than Pham: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}
Said Hossein Madani: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and Pham locked up the double on the turn already.

There was one other big pot going and that included Gregor Derkowski on his second bullet and Daniel Belov. Derkowski raised to 1,100 and Belov called on the button. On the {A-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop, Derkowski checked and called a bet of 1,000 before checking the {6-Diamonds} turn. Belov bet 2,500 and called a check-raise to 8,000 by Derkowski.

On the {6-Hearts} river, Derkowski moved all in for 21,575 and Belov reluctantly called to see his opponent turn over {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} for a full house, Belov only had {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

Re-Entry for Andreev

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Andrey Andreev
Andrey Andreev

On the heads-up flop of {8-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts}, Andre Haneberg continued as preflop aggressor and Andrey Andreev raised. Haneberg three-bet and called the shove of 20,000 by Andreev with pocket tens. The Russian only had the {6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} for middle pair and failed to get there with the {7-Hearts} turn and {J-Hearts} river.

Andreev headed to the cashier and immediately purchased his sole re-entry for the day.
