Jared Mahoney Takes Down WPT Montreal for CAD $453,122

The World Poker Tour has a new champion at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal, Quebec. On Thursday night, Jared Mahoney won 2015 partypoker.net WPT Montreal for CAD $453,122 as well as a seat in the season-ending WPT Tournament of Champions.

It was a long road for the new champion. Action concluded late on Day 5 of the tournament after a grueling week of poker. A total of 697 entries took to the tables over three starting flights before 294 players returned for Day 2. It took a few more days before the official final table of six players was set, and Mahoney was the short stack to begin the day.

Brian Altman was the chip leader when play resumed on the televised WPT final table, and he was the only player with a previous WPT title. Darryll Fish came in as the second-biggest stack and was another favorite as a player with both experience and talent.

The first one eliminated from the final table was AJ Gambino when he got it in with the {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} to Fish's {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}. Fish found an ace on the flop, and by the river, he had improved to a heart flush resulting in the first elimination of the day.

Next out was the only Canadian at the final table, Carter Swidler, who was all in preflop with the {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs} to Altman's {10-Spades}{j-Spades}. Swidler failed to hang on through the runout, which included two jacks.

Altman had a tough level when he found himself going from chip leader with more than half the chips in play to eliminated in about 15 minutes. He doubled up two opponents and then pushed all in with the {j-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and ran into Mahoney's {k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. The board ran {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{10-Clubs}{a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} and Altman hit the exit in fourth place.

Rainer Kempe was here looking for his first WPT win, but his hopes were stolen when he pushed all in with the {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and was called by Mahoney's {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. The {9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop couldn't have been more dramatic if you'd picked the cards from the deck on purpose as Kempe flopped two pair but Mahoney found a flush draw. The flush came in on the {j-Clubs} turn, and Kempe didn't find the boat he needed on the river. He was eliminated in third place.

Heads-up play between Fish and Mahoney began with the latter holding a narrow chip advantage, but the two of them swapped small pots back and forth, exchanging the chip lead with almost every hand.

Several levels later, Fish three-bet all in with the {a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} but Mahoney had woke up with {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}, making the easy call and winning all the chips in the tournament after the board ran out {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}.

Mahoney won the top prize of CAD $453,122 plus the WPT Tournament of Champions entry as well as a Hublot watch and the signature Playground Poker Club trophy belt, not to mention the prestige of the WPT title that will always accompany his name.

That's it for the 2015 edition of partypoker.net WPT Montreal. Thanks for following along.

Rainer Kempe Eliminated in Third Place for $195,940

Jared Mahoney raised it up to 500,000 from the button and Rainer Kempe pushed all in. Mahoney went in the tank and finally called.

Mahoney: {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Rainer: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

The flop was magnificent. The dealer swiped {9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs} across the table to give Rainer two pairs but Mahoney the flush draw to go with his ace overcard.

When the {j-Clubs} hit the turn, Mahoney took the lead with a flush and Rainer was drawing to a nine or seven for a full house.

The river was the {5-Clubs} and Mahoney scooped up the big pot, eliminating Rainer in third place for $195,940.

Brian Altman Eliminated in Fourth Place for $144,780

Level 32 : 75,000/150,000, 25,000 ante

Brian Altman

What a tough end of the level for Brian Altman, the only WPT Champions Club member on this final table. He went from holding half of the chips in play to eliminated in no time flat.

He pushed all in from the small blind and got called off by Jared Mahoney in the big blind.

Altman: {j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}
Mahoney: {k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

Mahoney was already ahead before he paired his bottom card on the {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop. The {a-Spades} turn added a flush draw to Altman's outs, but the river was the {a-Diamonds} and Altman saw his tournament life evaporate.

Altman was eliminated in fourth place for $144,780.

Carter Swidler Eliminated in Fifth Place for $108,410

The final Canadian at this Canadian WPT stop has been eliminated.

With action on Brian Altman on the button, he pushed all in to the small stacks in the blinds. Carter Swidler made the call and Jared Mahoney folded.

Altman: {10-Spades}{j-Spades}
Swidler: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Swidler was the favourite to find the double-up, and he liked the flop of {7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, but the turn brought the {j-Clubs} to pair Altman. Swidler could hit an ace or any club to survive, but the river of {j-Diamonds} was neither.

Swidler was eliminated in fifth place for $108,410.

AJ Gambino Eliminated in Sixth Place for $87,520

Level 29 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
AJ Gambino
AJ Gambino

AJ Gambino was in the cutoff and raised to 180,000. With action on Darryll Fish on the button, he three-bet to 355,000. It folded back around to Gambino who took little time to push all in and Fish snap-called.

Gambino: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Fish: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}

It was a classic race, but the flop of {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} made Fish a big favourite to win the pot. The turn of {k-Hearts} took away one of Gambino's outs as the flush draw came in, and the {10-Hearts} river filled the flush for Fish, eliminating Gambino on sixth place for $87,520.

The remaining players are now into six-figure paydays with fifth place earning $108,410.
