Event #2: $50,000 Poker Player's Championship

Day 3 Started

Dead Calm

It's oh so quiet
It's oh so quiet

It's a little bit eerie in here. At the moment, no one is playing poker in the Amazon Ballroom-- a rare sight indeed at the World Series of Poker. It's more than 30 minutes before the Day 3 restart of the $50,000 Players' Championship and the 38,000 square feet of this room is occupied only by a few dealers, a couple of floor supervisors, a hat trick of security guards, and a smattering of early-bird media. At 3 p.m., the 54 players who survived the first two days of play in this uber-elite event will gather around seven tables, spectators will flock to the rail, and the sound of clattering chips will rise like the volume being slowly raised on a stereo.

When the chips were bagged and tagged at around 2:30 this morning, Kirk Morrison held the chip lead with 741,000. He is closely trailed by 2006 $50K H.O.R.S.E. runner-up Andy Bloch and Mikael Thuritz with 697,500. Also still alive and kicking in this 8-game event are Chris Ferguson, John Juanda, Doyle Brunson, Scott Seiver, Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Cole South, and Daniel Alaei.

The plan is to play six 90-minute levels today. We might hit the money (at 16 players), we might not, although media row is setting the line around 20 players surviving Day 3.

Action will be underway in about half an hour. Stay tuned.

We're Underway!

The players have taken their seats, unbagged their chips and the cards are in the air on Day 3 of the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship.

Following a random draw for choice of game, we'll be starting the day with a little Omaha-8.

A Tough Start To The Day

While there are never any soft spots in a field of this quality, we've managed to single out one of the seven tables in action at the start of Day 3 which appears to be the one to watch this afternoon.

Table 309 features the likes of Ivey, Alaei, Morrison, Michael Mizrachi, Singer, Elezra, Zolotow and Sagstrom. Ouch!

Age Over Youth

Doyle Brunson

Omaha 8/b:

Justin Bonomo open-raised from UTG, and Doyle Brunson called from the small blind. Brunson check-raised Bonomo on the {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop, then led at the {K-Clubs} on the turn. Bonomo raised and Brunson called. The river was the {10-Hearts} and Brunson fired one more time. Bonomo looked him up.

Texas Dolly turned over {A-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for the nut flush and scooped the pot. Bonomo is down to 70,000 in chips.

Evdakov's Double-Double

Nikolay Evdakov
Nikolay Evdakov

Omaha 8/b:

Nikoaly Evdakov started play today with only 20,000 in chips but has already doubled up twice. After zipping up to 40,000 and change on an early hand, Evdakov doubled through Steve "MrSmokey1" Billirakis, committing the rest of his chips on a {K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop. Evdakov held {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and made the nut stright when the turn and river fell the {10-Spades} and the {Q-Diamonds}.

Evdakov is presently on 90,000 in chips while Billirakis is down to 35,000-- less than half of what he started with today.

Stevie Z Takes One From Ivey

Omaha 8/b:

Five players went to a flop of {J-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} where Steve Zolotow came out firing with a bet from the small blind. Erik Sagstrom made the call in the big blind before Phil Ivey put in a raise from under the gun. Two folds and then two calls from Zolotow and Sagstrom as the {7-Spades} fell on the turn.

Action checked to Ivey who fired out a bet. This time, Zolotow was the lone caller as Sagstrom stepped aside.

The river brought the {4-Spades} and this time Zolotow led at the pot with Ivey looking him up with a call. Zolotow tabled {10-Spades}{2-Spades}{A-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for the flush which was good as Ivey's cards hit the muck.

Mizzi Stays Alive, Just

Razz:

Sorel Mizzi has been tipped as a dark horse in many WSOP fantasy teams this year, but he'll need a few more hands like this one if he's to get himself into contention for the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship.

The game was Razz and Mizzi was all in on third street against Justin Bonomo. Here's how the boards ran out:

Bonomo: ({2-}{Q-}) {3-}{5-}{7-}{3-} ({9-})
Mizzi: ({A-}{6-}) {8-}{9-}{5-}{K-} ({4-})

Once Bonomo found a nine on seventh street, Mizzi would need to improve to stay alive. He squeezed out a four to make an eighty-six low to double up to 40,000 chips.
