Many Notables Survive Until Day 2

Yesterday, 2,341 entrants began Event No. 8, the $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Event. A number of poker's most recognizable names made the tournament, but not all of them survived to Day 2.

Phil Hellmuth is still in contention for his record 12th bracelet. Also moving on to the second day of action are Danny Wong, Steve Sung, Jean-Robert Bellande, Michael Gracz, Amnon Filippi, and Matt Hawrilenko.

Day 2 will start with 270 players and we need to lose 27 to reach the money. The tournament is about to get underway.

Meyer Doubles Through Hellmuth

After Phil Hellmuth raised from middle position to 4,000, Shawn Meyer pushed all of his 9,300 chips into the middle from the big blind. Hellmuth snapped him off, only having to call a little bit more. Hellmuth held two fives, but was up against the two kings for Meyer.

The board ran out {J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Meyer was able to double to around 20,000. Hellmuth still has 84,000 chips in his stack.

Hellmuth Mixing It Up Almost Every Hand

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth has been involved in a lot of pots since the starts of the day. In this particular hand, on a flop of {3-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Spades}, Hellmuth bet 4,000 and was called by Daniel Adams.

When the {J-Spades} hit the turn, Hellmuth bet 9,000 and Adams called yet again. Hellmuth then checked when the {7-Hearts} hit the river, as did Adams.

"Ace high," announced Hellmuth. Adams turned over {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} to take the pot. Hellmuth is down to 64,000.

JRB Takes the Lead

Jean-Robert Bellande opened to 3,000 under the gun, and Vagan Sudzhyan called. Davin Costa than raised to 11,000. Bobby four-bet to 31,000 while keeping up a steady stream of chatter, trying to goad the Costa into shoving. Instead, Sudzyhan folded and Costa just called. The flop fell {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs}, and Bellande bet 50,000. Costa gave it up, leaving himself 82,000 behind. Robert is now in the chip lead with 160,000.
