Halfway Home

Tony Dunst
Tony Dunst

Eight grueling days -- some of them with multiple flights. That's how long it takes to consolidate the richest, grandest, most prestigious poker tournament in the world from its starting field (7,319 this year) to its final November Nine. It took almost four full days just to burst the money bubble.

We passed that point yesterday, which means the 574 remaining players are only halfway home. It hasn't been easy to get this far. They've endured countless suckouts and probably sucked out once or twice themselves. They've put in 33 hours of poker to guarantee themselves $24,079. But the biggest prize of all -- a berth in the November Nine -- is a long, long way off.

When we left off last night, American-turned-Aussie-turned- American Tony Dunst had surged to the chip lead, amassing more than 1.5 million in chips. At the current limits of 3,000-6,000, that's 250 big blinds.

Dunst has the pole position, but anyone who unbags chips today has a shot at catching him. Things have a tendency to shake up after eight hours of world-class poker. We'll be there for all eight starting in about twenty minutes. Stay tuned!

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Cards are in the air after TD Jack Effel did the honors. Players got their fifth rundown of the rules this week, this time with the fun part about how to get paid. Of course, they'll all be trying to get through the day without a visit to the payout desk. We're playing four levels today with a 90-minute dinner break after the third. Time to get to work!

Table Troubles

For two consecutive days now, we've heard players complaining about the table draws. When Jon Aguiar took his seat on Day 4, he noticed that his entire Day 3 table was in his row. "Look!" Aguiar said. "Two players there, two players there, two players there. All from my Day 3 table. Something is wrong."

Fast forward about 12 hours, and we witnessed another round of questions as the chip bags came out last night. Along with the bags, the players receive their table draw slips, and a few of them were noticing the cluster effect once again where nearby players drew seats near to each other once again. There were some complaints to the floor staff, but they insist that the draw is fair and random.

Table 352 is the real eye catcher in our field. Tony Dunst and Matt Affleck are first and fourth in chips, respectively, and they were sitting back-to-back at adjacent tables all day yesterday. Twenty-four hours later, they've gotten even closer to each other. They'll be side-by-side in the one and two seats at 352 today, and it's Dunst with the favorable position on his fellow big stack.

That's a pairing we'll be keeping a close eye on to be sure.

That Didn't Take Long

Not thirty seconds after Jack Effel instructed the dealers to "Shuffle up and deal," we heard the first dealer shout. "All in and call on 363!" A short-stacked Karina Jett had open-shoved with {A-Clubs}{k-Clubs}. A player called... also with Big Slick. They chopped the pot as the whole table shared a tension-breaking laugh.

Billirakis Sends Robbins Home

The "all in and call" shouts are coming at a measured pace. Such a cry brought us to Red 341, where Steve Billirakis was looking to eliminate Jamie Robbins. Robbins was all in with {k-}{q-} and dominated by Billirakis' {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}. Robbins couldn't find a queen on a board of {6-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. He shook Billirakis' hand and then exited towards the payouts cage.
