Congratulations to David "Bakes" Baker, Winner of Event 32: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. ($451,779)!

Before today it was hard to argue that this hasn’t already been one of the most exciting years the World Series of Poker has seen in a long time. Today just made it all that more exciting as a massive finish to Event 31: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E has seen David "Bakes" Baker crowned the champion, overcoming John Monnete heads up and defeating a final eight that included Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth.

It all started three days ago when 178 players signed-up for their chance to become the champion of H.O.R.S.E. By the end of the first day only 136 survived and when Day 2 was all over, just 15 of those were still in contention. That brings us to today.

John Monnette was the player who started the final day with the chip lead and he managed to make it all the way to the final eight. Some of the players who fell by the wayside during that period were David Bach (14th), John Hennigan (12th) and Scott Clements (12th).

Mori Eskandani was at the “unofficial” final table, but bubbled the official final table when he was eliminated in 9th place. Here is how the final eight stacked up.

3Matt Waxman515,000
4Abe Mosseri565,000
5David “Bakes” Baker842,000
6Phil Hellmuth704,000
7John Monnette931,000
8Dan Kelly297,000

As you can see, it was Monnette who took his lead from the start of the day straight into the final table, while Ivey was not far behind. Amazingly this was Ivey’s fourth final table in just over a week and he would be looking to turn it into his first gold bracelet of 2012.

The first player to hit the rail at the final table was Dan Kelly. The last hand of Kelly’s tournament was during a hand of Stud Eight-or-Better and it ended up being Hellmuth who dealt the fatal blow. Next out the door was Matt Waxman in 7th place, followed closely by Abe Mosseri in 6th.

Mosseri was short-stacked during an Omaha Eight-or-Better orbit and ended up being all-in preflop holding {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} against David "Bakes" Baker’s {a-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Hearts}. The {j-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{5-Spades} board brought Mosseri no help and he was sent packing.

At this point both Ivey and Hellmuth were still in contention to make poker history, but unfortunately they would be eliminated back-to-back. First to go was Ivey, with his elimination occurring during a hand of Razz against Monnette. By the time all the cards were dealt out, here is how they looked.

Ivey: ({7-}{4-}) / {j-}{j-}{7-}{3-} / {x-}
Monnette: ({9-}{2-}) / {6-}{10-}{q-}{3-} / {7-}

Ivey never flipped over his final downcard as he was sent home in 5th place and will have to find his first gold bracelet of the summer in another event. After Ivey’s elimination, it didn’t take long for Hellmuth to be the short-stacked player.

A roller coaster ride of a level saw Hellmuth all-in multiple times, but it wasn’t until a hand of Omaha Eight-or-Better that Hellmuth would actually be eliminated. Monnette would be the player who dealt the final blow to Hellmuth, with his {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} being too strong for Hellmuth’s {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} on a {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Spades} board. With Hellmuth out in 4th place, Monnette had eliminated both “Phils” and we would take to three-handed play.

Never one to shy away from the action, Monnette would end up busting the third-place finisher during a hand of hold’em. Monnette’s {7-Clubs}{6-Spades} outdrew the {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} of Paul Sokoloff, sending him home in 3rd place.

Despite eliminating three players in a row, Monnette still only held a slight chip lead going into heads-up play against Baker. By the time it was over, either Monnette was going to have his second gold bracelet of the summer after taking down the victory in Event 10: $5,000 Seven Card Stud, or Baker would have his second career bracelet after winning the $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball event in 2010.

It took just over 90 minutes for the deed to be done in the end, with Baker eventually managing to overcome Monnette, details of which can be seen below. After this effort, Monnette now has a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finish during this year’s WSOP and now sits atop the Player of the Year board.

Stud

David "Bakes" Baker: {x-}{x-} / {5-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{9-Clubs} / {x-}
John Monnette: {x-}{x-} / {2-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{a-Hearts} / {x-}

Monnette brought it in, Baker completed, and Monnette called. Baker led out on fourth and fifth street, and Monnette called both bets. Monnette made a better board on sixth, and check-called bets on both sixth and seventh. Baker turned over {j-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts} for jacks and nines, and Monnette mucked his hand, leaving just 150,000 chips in front of him.

The next hand, the chips went in immediately, and the hands looked like this:

Baker: {7-Clubs} ({7-Spades}{4-Spades})
Monnette: {6-Spades} ({j-Spades}{8-Diamonds})

Baker's three up-cards were {6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{k-Spades}, Monnette's were {9-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}, and Baker flipped over a third seven - the {7-Hearts} - on seventh street. We never even caught Monnette's seventh card, because he quickly mucked, shook Baker's hand, and left.

Monnette now has a first, a second, and a third at the 2012 WSOP, making him the leader in the Player of the Year race. He also takes home $279,206 for his efforts.

Hold'em

John Monnette, who crippled Paul Sokoloff in a Stud 8 hand moments earlier, raised from the small blind. Sokoloff made it three bets, and Monnette called. The flop came down {5-Clubs}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and Monnette led out. Sokoloff raised, Monnette instantly re-raised, and Sokoloff called all in.

Monnette: {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Sokoloff: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

The turn was the {7-Hearts}, giving Monnette a leading pair of sevens. The suicide king ({k-Hearts}) completed the board, eliminating Sokoloff in third place.

Phil Hellmuth Eliminated in 4th Place ($134,056)

Phil Hellmuth - 4th Place
Phil Hellmuth - 4th Place

Phil Hellmuth has had a tough time since he got back from the dinner break and has now seen his tournament come to an end. It was during a hand of Omaha Eight-or-Better, that started when Hellmuth posted the big blind - leaving himself with just a small amount behind.

"Well, regardless of what happens, it's been a great final table," Hellmuth said to his three foes, shaking each of their hands.

"It's not over yet Phil, you've got a lot of life left in you," said Monnette in reaction to the hand shake. However, Monnette was wrong.

Monnette opened the hand with a riase from under the gun and Hellmuth made the call. On the {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop, Hellmuth checked and Monnette bet. Hellmuth then committed his last chips - an extra 15,000. Monnette called and the two players turned their hands over.

Monnette: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Hellmuth: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

The {9-Clubs} turn and the {8-Spades} turn were not what Hellmuth was looking for as he made his way home in 4th place. Another great effort from the 12-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner.

Razz

Phil Ivey brought it in with a {j-} up, and the action folded to John Monnette, who completed with a {6-}. Having less than two big bets, Ivey raised, putting most of his stack at risk, and Monnette re-raised all in. Ivey called.

Ivey tabled {7-}{4-}, Monnette {9-}{2-}, and the boards ran out like this:

Ivey: ({7-}{4-}) / {j-}{j-}{7-}{3-} / {x-}
Monnette: ({9-}{2-}) / {6-}{10-}{q-}{3-} / {7-}

Ivey never flipped over his downcard, rather he left the mothership to go play in Event 35: $2,500 Mixed Hold'em.

Abe Mosseri Eliminated in 6th Place ($75,511)

Abe Mosseri barely had a leg to stand on when he got his stack all-in during a round of Omaha Eight-or-Better. It was against David Bakes Baker, who opened up the hand in question with a raise from under the gun. Mosseri was in the big blind and committed his last chips, with the two players turning their hands over.

Mosseri: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Baker: {a-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Hearts}

The {j-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{5-Spades} board was no help to Mosseri, with Baker managing to scoop up the pot to send Mosseri home in 6th place for a $75,511 score.

Ivey in Trouble

Stud 8

It was at the conclusion of a Stud Eight-or-Better hand that Phil Ivey would sit behind a very small chip stack. It was between Ivey and the short-at-the-time David Bakes Baker.

Ivey: {x-}{x-} / {3-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} / {x-}
Baker: {x-}{x-} / {6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds} / {x-}

Both players committed bets on the first round of betting, then on fourth, Baker led and Ivey called. Fifth street would see Ivey lead and Baker raise it up, leaving himself with little behind. Ivey made the call and then on sixth street, put in the bet to see Baker all-in.

By the time seventh was dealt out, Baker had his {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{7-Hearts} hole cards on the table, enough for the low and the high, sending Ivey's cards into the muck.

Matt Waxman Eliminated in 7th Place ($58,093)

Matt Waxman - 7th Place
Matt Waxman - 7th Place

It took two hands to see Matt Waxman eliminated from this final table. The first was a Razz hand and it left him crippled and the very next hand was Stud and that sent him home.

The Razz hand began when John Monnette brought it in with a {j-}. Paul Sokoloff then called with a {7-} and Waxman completed with a {6-}. Sokoloff called and drew and {a-}, while Waxman drew a {j-}. Sokoloff bet and Waxman called as Sokoloff drew a {7-} and Waxman a {k-}. When Sokoloff bet here, Waxman said, "I can not beat you in a pot, no matter what," and folded his cards.

That left him with less than a big bet and on the next hand, when the rotation was changed to Stud, Waxman committed the last of his chips during the first round of betting with an {a-Clubs} showing against Abe Mosseri and John Monnette. Mosseri and Monnette battled it out until fifth street when Mosseri folded, and then the cards were turned face-up.

Monnette's {9-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} (in no particular order), was good for two-pair and enough to send Waxman's {a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} into the muck.

For that effort, Waxman goes home with $58,093 and we are now six-handed.

Mori Eskandani Eliminated in 9th Place ($35,923)

Mori Eskandani - 9th Place
Mori Eskandani - 9th Place

Stud 8

With the exit of Mori Eskandani in 9th place, we are heading to the final table. But first, let us explain how Eskandani's gallant elimination occurred.

It was during a hand of Stud Eight-or-Better and it all started when Paul Sokoloff brought it in with a {2-Spades} out front. Matt Waxman then made the call with his {q-Spades} and John Monnette called with a {8-Hearts}. Mori Eskandani then completed with his {a-Diamonds} and Monnette, Waxman and Sokoloff all made the call.

Sokoloff: {x-}{x-} / {2-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} / {x-}
Waxman: {x-}{x-} / {q-Spades}{7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} (FOLDED)
Monnettte: {x-}{x-} / {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} / {x-}
Eskandani: {x-}{x-} / {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} / {x-}

On fourth street, Monnette bet his pair and his three opponents called. Fifth street saw Monnette again bet and another three calls came along for the ride. On sixth street, Monnette led again and this time Eskandani raised. Sokoloff made the call and Waxman got out of the way. Monnette threw in the extra chips to call and we would see the final card dealt out.

Monnette checked on seventh and Eskandani shoved his remaining 38,000 into the pot. Sokoloff called and then Monnette check-rasied. Sokoloff called and the three players turned their hole cards over.

Eskandani held {5-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} was good for a flush, but Monnette's {4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} gave him the full house. With no low for Eskandani, he was sent home. The remainder of the pot was chopped up, with Sokoloff holding {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{8-Spades}, enough for a low.
